310 Cadet

I have two original Martini Cadets I was trying to shoot today. I have 310 Cadet brass , Are there different case lengths? One appears to be about 3/16 shorter than the ones I bought. Both made by BSA but one has a military style ladder sight instead of the screw type. Neither looks messed with. Notice ring on middle case.

310 cadets are known for having different chamber lengths - and normally the BSA is the one with the adjustable rear sight, the military style ladder rear  was used by Greener.
As the case uses a heeled bullet, case length is what controls 'seating depth', so it is a good idea to have dedicated cases for each rifle, trimmer to the right length.
However, they are pretty accurate indeed if your eyes can still manage the open sights.  Also, it is very easy to reload:
- Decap fired case
- Seat primer
- Drop powder
- Seat lubed bullet

That's it.  32-20 cases can be trimmed to be used, and you definitely need the heeled bullet - a .311 bullet definitely won't shoot well.

The early (first) model Cadets had the ladder type rear sight and the second model had the windage adjustable rear sights.

Are you sure the rifle that  fired the case in the middle was not rechambered to 32-20? That was a common thing to do.

JSB30 In my experience any Cadet that will chamber a 32/20 has headspace problems as the rim on 32/20 is thicker than "proper" 310 Cadet cases. However as also said a lot of Cadets were chambered for 32/20 as was my first ever one (bought 1958) as Cadet ammo was very hard to get back then.

My original Cadet does not need the donor 32-20 rims thinned down. Some do, some don't.

Just noticed this topic.
There is an Ideal double cavity 310 mold on ebay now.  Has that funky shaped bullet cavity.  FYI only, got no dog in this hunt.

Mine will chamber (and fire) both the 310 and the 32-20.  No 32-20 stamp or marking on the receiver or barrel.

The 310 uses an outside lubricated bullet of .316" diameter. Hence, the extra length of the 32-20 case just takes up the space normally occupied by the bullet.
If you have a Cadet that does not need the 32-20 rims thinned down, then ye:- it will probably chamber and fire the 32-20 round. Mind you, you won't be able to hit anything with it!

I have a swage to thin the rims of .32-20 so they will chamber in a cadet. If anyone needs this done I will gladly do it for postage back to you.
