A friend of mine just got this 22 and we are looking for any information we can find on it. It has JFK jr engraved on the side and has a model 52 Winchester barrel on it. Maybe possible it belonged to the late John F. Kennedy jr. Thanks for any info you can provide.

Probably not, since it's engraved "JKF" not "JFK".
Doesn't look like any factory engraving I've ever seen, but certainly is done in very high quality European style.
Is it a JM Marlin Marked, or Marlin Firearms Co. marked Ballard? The latter would date it after 1881.

Great gun!
Did you consider changing your initials?

Germans & Austrians (including their descendants in this country) were the ones who especially loved oak leaves & other carving.

Did you take the fore arm off yet to see if there's anything marked on the bottom of the barrel. This looks like a very high quality build, might have some info on who built it/when. This reminds me of some of the Arthur Hubalek Ballards that oak leaf carving on the stocks.

Yes, but screwing in a 52 barrel? Not likely.

Dave's (40-82Ballard) Ballard with a Model 52 barrel shoots pretty well. We aren't sure who built it, but they did a good job.

Don't doubt it--52 barrels were first choice of folks in the '20s & '30s looking for a factory-made match-quality .22 barrel blank. Actually, Hubalek probably had a supply of 52 brls in his shop that he'd taken off customer's guns to replace with one of his own. Would be very interesting to know how much better one of his, or Pope's, or Johnson's, performed under the conditions of small-bore competition, as opposed to machine-rest. Have a feeling the advantage of a custom brl may have been more psychological than actual, but many shooters obviously believed otherwise, if they were willing to discard a perfectly good 52 brl.

According to the rules for monogramming the last initial is in the middle.

I tried the initials J.F.K. Jr. in the Ancestry.com search engine. Got 4.2 million hits. Would we assume that it is from the 20s or 30s?

Yes...the great heyday of small-bore competition.

If you were commissioning a high-end Ballard remodel in the between-the-wars period, the person for whom the rifle was made was likely 30 or 40 years old, or older. Probably not made for some kid, who would have wanted the newest, not a redone Ballard. Perhaps born about 1890 to 1900? That takes it down to 600,000 hits.

Yes, that's true but, it would be larger than the first and middle on either side.

"Dave's (40-82Hepburn) Ballard with a Model 52 barrel shoots pretty well. We aren't sure who built it, but they did a good job".
Actually I have two Ballards with Winchester 52 barrels. One was built in the early 1930s. It was built for a man who shot it in competition in the 30s and 40s and was given to my father in 1950. The other is of unknown origin, but a high quality build. This one has a palm rest, adjustable hooked buttplate (similar to a Freeland), speed-locked, spring-loaded mechanism that holds the lever at 90 degree position when breech is open, adjustable trigger/over travel, and custom hammer and trigger. Plus it will shoot 1/2" 100 yd groups.
