Guidance needed .............
Frequency? Quantity? What to use?
Or, is it really necessary at all?
(my normal mix is 20:1 - 25:1, certified lead:tin)
Thanks. Ray

Ray I flux with a chunk of carnauba wax when I alloy the tin to the lead. For about 100 Lbs. I use a chunk about the size of a marble and keep stirring till its just ash. After that I pour it into a cornbread pan to make ingots and never flux again.

I use beeswax and only flux once, when I make up a new pot or add a lot to it. as 40_rod says, ash is the key to knowing when the flux cleans the alloy. Common candle wax and parafin won't get it clean. I've always been kind of afraid to try other things, hearing about some of them causing problems with the pot, like Marvel, others being messy like saw dust. BW is fairly cheap and does a wonderful job and doesn't smell bad (I do my casting in the house).

I do like 40_Rod and Frank, except I flux every time I add to my casting pot also. That may not be necessary but my feeling is you can't overdo it.

Marvelux is nasty stuff. I used it when I first started casting not knowing any better. Do not use it.

About as many recipes for flux as for bullet lube and all work to some extent.
Rodeo rosin is the only thing I have found that will significantly reduce the amount of slag on top of the pot when starting.
Not sure if that is good or bad and smokes terribly.

Marvelux will rust everything with 200 yards!

I use beeswax.  I use it when ever the crud collects on top the pot.

Ray, regardless of the source of the lead - Flux It
* I flux the melt in my casting pot twice before I start to cast.  The resulting dross is nothing more than a black-gray ash. When ready to cast after fluxing, the melt is shiny and smooth
There are many fluxes and one of the best is pine rosin

Rodeo rosin is pure pine rosin and available from Rodeo suppliers at about $15 per pound.
Don't have to go out and scrape pine trees. Color does not make much difference.

Wood shavings from a planer or router are cheap (free if you know a woodworker) and not too messy. Cheaper than beeswax (which I think is best) and pretty effective. Joe S

I use deer tallow (fat). I had an old timer at the gun club turn me onto it . I've been religi

ously using it for the last couple of years. I just flux like I did before, no more no less.

I keep it in a zip lock bag in the freezer. It doesn't draw any moisture so there are no explosion.

It's pretty easy to find this time of year if you're where there is any deer hunting going on. If so, find you a local processor for game animals. They just throw it out into a dumpster.

You might give it a try. Bet you'll like it.

I wonder if lard would work as well as deer tallow.

I know a lot of old black powder shooters used it in their lube.
