Primer Diagnosis Help Needed

Print Post
Hi all,
Recently I posted having problems with a load for my B78 25-06, Thanks for all your input !!

I have some detailed pics of the blown primers, and would greatly appreciate your thoughts.

This are Fed210 primers, and I am wondering if the Fed215 being magnum primers might be a better stronger choice ?
Could this be a rare case of defective primers ?
I am well aware I am reaching max pressures, however reducing the load affects accuracy greatly.

Rifle Browning B78
Load 54 gr RL22
Nosler 110 AccuBond
Bullet Jump to Lands Aprox 10 mil

Have a great day, Thanks a mill all !!

How often do you clean your brass?
How do you seat your primers?

Not seeing pressure signs on case.  I would think CCI #41 SRP would mitigate the primer issue.  But, look, l to r, at the 2nd and 3rd primers.  I've never seen holes like that.

I had a similar problem with some Winchester Large Rifle Magnum primers. They would crack right at the edge (where yours have holes) and leak hot gas out, cutting little craters in my breech block. This was with a low pressure load in my 33-47 Schuetzen rifle. Changing to a different lot of primers cured the problem.

The holes in your primers make me think they're brittle for some reason. I saw this same problem mentioned on another forum recently involving a bolt action rifle. I don't remember what brand primer it was but the fellow was told to contact the manufacturer and they would make it right with him. Someone had even had a bolt replaced (due to gas cuts on the face) by a primer manufacturer.

Bottom line is look at your breech block to see if you have any damage and try a different lot or brand of primers.

Hope this is of some help to you.

A friend was having similar problems with his 308 bolt action - primer leaks and bolt face erosion.  He contacted the primer manufacturer and sent the rifle and primers to them.  They found that the brass stock used in making the primers was defective.  They had the gun manufacturer replace the bolt and sent him the gun and new primers back.

Might want to contact Federal as get their take of the primers.

Something to check? Looking at your pictures, it appears that your flash holes may be on the big size.

INdeed, I had same problem yrs ago with AR-15.
This was with some factory ball ammo that did the
same thing with occasional holes in the corner of the
primers.
Had to replace the bolt head.

Meanwhile, besides changing primers, I suggest you seat your bullets deeper.
0.010 is really minimal for jacketed bullets and high pressure loads.
