Making a de-capper?
Nov 4th, 2016 at 4:32pm
Print Post
I need a de-capping rod for my 25-25 Stevens. I would like to make one, but don't have a lathe. I tried to make one out of an old punch using a 1/2 HP wheel grinder, but it is difficult to get the point long and skinny enough without breaking it off.

Any other ideas?

Drill the end of a rod and epoxy a RCBS decapping pin, into it.

You can purchase decaping rods from RCBS also. They are not expensive and if you want to use a hammer to do the decaping a piece of steel can be drilled and tapped so that you can screw the rod in and that way you  will not damage the threads.

Thanks all.

For $3.50, I might as well give this a try.

yea at that price that would be hard to pass up, and if the expander ball on there is a tad big you can cut it down with some abrasive paper. Looks like a good deal to me.

I have an old Lyman 310 universal decapping die for my tong tool.  It works for 28-30 cases.  Probably would work for 25-25.

And there's the old trick of gluing a small nail to a piece of dowel...

Do you know if the 310 die will fit on the original Ideal tools?

That may depend on exactly which Ideal tong tool you are referring to.
I have an old Ideal tong tool (sans mould) marked either 25-21 or 25-25 that uses adjustable dies, but this particular tool is smaller overall than the old #3 tong tool, and uses quite a bit smaller diameter threaded dies than the #3 or 310.
I picked it up because it looked like it may have been the size that Ideal used to fill their special orders for the 22 Maynard ExL CF cartridge.
I ended up making a narrower hook with matching plate to use in the small 310 handles and a set of dies.

Best I can tell it is a #3, but I am just going off of pictures. It is also marked 25-25 & 21 though.

The Lee 25-20 decapper will not work for the .25-25 cases from Rocky Mountain Cartridge. I thought this might be the case because the RMC cases start to tapper inward about half way through the case. I learned this last year by destroying a case  when my uncle and I tried to make a breech seater with one. I will try to work it down and see if I can get it to work.

My handles are like yours, but have two dies - one like you have shown in your picture, and also a double adjustable die.
Both of mine are marked 8-20 instead of 9-20, and those numbers aren't the thread sizes of the dies.
