Nice little wind gauge front sight
Oct 30th, 2016 at 6:55pm
Print Post
Today I picked up an nice little wind gauge front sight, thinking it might be a Stevens or a Lyman. However, after looking through my books, I'm mystified. The insert doesn't resemble any of the sights I've seen in the books. There are no markings at all on the sight & it doesn't go with the Redfield box in the pict.

Can anyone identify this sight?

Regards,
Ron

I'm unsure of the maker, but I would guess the insert was cut or reworked. Likely the outside was not a good fit for the globe diameter, so someone simply cut that portion off and filed the remainder to accept the clip that holds it in.
I've seen it done several times over the years, and it makes the sight usable if you can't find the right inserts.

It is a Remington sight . New or Axtell?? the aperture has been heavily modified.

It certainly doesn't look like a new manufacture to me. The screw was all seized up & it took a trip through the ultra sonic bath and then some Rem oil to get the dove tail and screw moving freely. The screw has a smaller diameter front section with a left hand thread, and a larger diameter back section with a right hand thread.

I believe the dovetails are different sizes on Stevens and Remingtons. So now I realize I can try the sight in a hepburn barrel and some stevens barrels I have. That should ID what the sight is for.

I do have an Axtell fixed front sight so I can try the insert from that one (if I can find the Axtell in all this stuff).

Regards,
Ron

With a spirit level clip installed, the taller Remington windgauge design positions the spirit level without obstructing the lower half of the globe and insert.
Installing a spirit level clip on the lower Winchester 69B Windgauge sight clutters things up.

Wow, that eBay sight brought good money. Especially since I got the wind gauge sight & a 310 tong tool in 38 special for $60!
It was at the very last table at the gun show & made the trip worth while.

Ron

You paid retail used price for the 310 tool and got the sight for free!  Great find.
