John Boy,
Thank you for the clarification about your 32-20 being chambered in a #2, instead of in a #4.
I'm personally feeling safer.     Smiley
That's an interesting thought about the possibility of the #4-S Boy Scout rifle, the #4-S Military Model , and the #4 Cadet rifle possibly being sold as military contract...

  Greetings all:
After soaking the barrel in mineral spirits overnight and rubbing lightly with Hoppes#9 and 0000 steel wool, I found a serial number on the underside of the barrel-- 307790 (thank you BP).
I also found on the bottom of the barrel to the rear of the forend mounting screw hole, a set of marks that look like tracks from a track laying tractor. There are 58 of these marks ====== ================= Does anyone know what they are for?
The barrel is marked  .22  SHORT OR LONG RIFLE. Would anyone know if this would stabilize standard velocity long rifle ammunition?
Thanks everyone for your help!

John Gyde' mentions serrations on hammer and breechblock began around 315000 in 1923 in his book. So I'd guess your #4 is probably from around that same year.

I would use subsonic, or target ammunition.  Lower pressure like it was designed for.
