35-40 Dies & Bullet(s)

Anyone shooting the 35-40 in any version? Having one of my Hepburn barrels lined to 35-40 using a TJ's 9mm liner (0.348" x 0.356" x 10" twist) and will need dies. Am wondering what you might be using? The reamer being using is a Dan Theodore design based on necking down the 38-55 case to 35cal.

Am also interested in a 35cal bullet (or two). Rifle will have a 26" barrel. Would like to find one optimized for 200yd and one for 600yd, though I know the 35-40 might be an iffy caliber for anything as long as 600yd. Anyone shooting a 35cal and having success at 200yd (and longer distances)?

Glenn my 35/40  has a CH die set with 35/40 Lewis on the box. I have been using WW brass and have to neck turn to .009 neck thickness to get to work.I think Starline 2.080 brass would work better in my chamber but haven't tried it yet. For bullets I have a paul Jones NASA weighing at 345 grains and it will shoot real well to 300 , that's all I've tried it at. I take it to buffalo matches and it will knock the Rams down as good as a 40/65 at 300.
Kokomokid shoots one and he has a 345 grain money bullet that came from Steve Baldwin. Any help I can be give me a yell, Bill

Bill - thanks for the info. Unfortunately, too late to get a PJ mold, other than used. Sagebrush offers a couple of 35cal molds, but not sure of their status as a supplier these days due to illness of the owner. Hopefully, he is in good health again. Maybe I could beg, borrow, trade or steal a few of each from you sometime this winter.

My current supply of brass is Win. Hopefully, they will resize and not require neck turning, which I find one of the more tedious case prep jobs. As you say, there is always Starline, which I've not had much luck with (they keep shrinking in my 40-65 - stated out with 250 cases and am down to <150 due to length shrinking).

Art - thanks. Steve has been very helpful in this project. He just told me this afternoon that CH4D offers a 35-40 Maynard "DT" dieset that is designed for use with the DT reamer. I'll get that ordered tomorrow.

sssshooter,
Please note that the DT 35-50 is made from the (larger base dia) 30=40 brass, NOT your 35=40 from 38 55 brass.
So that set of dies will only be ok for neck sizing, etc

Glenn,
What is your twist?
Will have to do with what length bullet will work in
your 35-40

I was under the impression that the 35-55 was using 30-40 brass and all 35-40's were using 38-55 brass.
Glenn , Steve Baldwin bought all the 345 grain moulds from Sagebrush, last I talked to him he still had one to sell. That's the money bullet in the picture.
I'll be glad to send some NASA bullets but I only have 25 of the sagebrush money bullets and I haven't had time to try them. I do have the drawing of that mould , I will probably have Steve Brooks cut one for me sometime

Glenn here's a pic of my die set.I wouldn't worry about the Starline brass because it will lengthen when sizing to 35 cal

Arnie - not quite sure I understand what you said. The gunsmith that is lining/chambering my rifle has a DanT reamer and he tells me that it is based on the 38-55 case and not the 30-40 Krag case. Steve Baldwin tells me the same thing with his reamer, which is also available. I much prefer the 38-55 based case as the brass is readily available. Have plenty of 30-40 cases, but they are to feed my 38-50 and don't want to have to go through sizing them to feed the 35-40. Guess I'll double-check in the morning.

Glenn,
Sorry for the confusion. You had mentioned something about
a 35-50 die set.  I believe 35-50 and also 35-55, as you said
would use the 30-40K brass.
or maybe the "35-50" length could use
303B brass which is close to the same base dia and is more easily found.
Certainly it is clear the 35-40 would use the 38-55 brass
as you intend.

Glenn,   My 4D is labeled 35-40 Maynard (DT).    I think you have my reamer specks and if it works for you let me know.   I'll send it  unless you were to be in OKC for the Nov Match.   Starline 38-55 works perfect for my reamer design but my groove is .357 - shooting a .358 - .359 bullet.     Too light for you but that is due to my twist.   You know that story!   Brooks made the mold.

Best Regards,
John

Oops........... went back and checked my posts and fixed the 35-"50" typo. It is definitely 35-40 that I'm building. Sorry for the confusion.

Dave at CH4D was kind enough to send me these drawings of the various dies (DT, Lewis & Lucas) he offers (last night, no less). Believe they are all based on the 38-55 case.

It looks like DT reamer has a tapered tight neck, also long brass so it looks like Starline is going to be your Brass of choice.I neck turn .500 down on my WW cases to .009 and fireform them and it's a nice snug fit to hand seat the bullet in the straight neck.
