Martini Henry peep sight?
Oct 13th, 2016 at 10:15pm
Print Post
Does anyone know of a reasonably available peep sight that will work on a Martini Henry? I know there are a couple of originals that are like golden hens' teeth, but I'm hoping for a solution that's a bit more frugal and a bit more expedient.

I'd prefer not to do anything terrible to this nice original rifle. I just can't enjoy it much with the original open rear and my not-so-youthful eyes.

Any un-tested ideas for solving this problem would also be welcome.

Thanks as always for your attention and wisdom.

What model is your martini?. 22rf or centerfire?. There are a few sights made by parker hale that will fit some of the 22 rimfires and if a centerfire rifle that was a rimfire converted to centerfire you could still use some of the parker hale sights. Would need more information to help with answers.Pics would be a great help also. Frank

The neatest fitting is the original Meus aperature sight which occasionally turn up at gunshows. No drilling or tapping so won't ruin a valuable collector piece.

It is fixed by two screws, one replaces the breech block pivot and the other the extractor pivot pin and has a lock nut.

When finished for the day, the sight folds down the side of the action

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

That Meus sight looks like it might fall into the "golden hen's teeth" category here in the states!

Indeed.

On the other hand, it's mounting bracket looks like a possible way to mount all sorts of readily available receiver sights to the rifle.

I knew asking here would get me on my way.

Thanks guys!

BAW, you must be physic as soon as I saw Marlene's reply I had thought of a Meus sight as one of the answers. But if I may suggest to Marlene she may want to look on Gary Fellers web page ( google is your friend) and see what he may have for the martini. That and check ebay or gunbroker also. That or check with creedmore sports and see what type of adaptors they sell for the redfield sights. Might have to get the backside of the adaptor machined flat to fit the martini but there are a bunch of redfield sights that the adaptor will fit. Frank

There are many variations of the way the sight is mounted

BAW, those are pretty cool sights- not seen up here mostly.
But, I hope that your are psychic, and not physic- that might make things unpleasant for you and those around you. Roll Eyes

Here is an idea for a very simple home made sight. You could adapt to be as simple of complicated as you feel capable.

Thanks BAW, I think I'll be doing something very much like that, but perhaps hardware that's a hair prettier, if I can manage it.

If you mount a bracket on the side of the action you can put any side mounted sight on the rifle. Mine happens to have a Hammerli on it.

Here is an easy to make universal sight holder the block is held i place by making a new longer pivot pin and the sight is just screwed to the block.

Cheers,
Laurie

Long Range, would you be able to post a picture that shows more clearly how the mount attaches to the receiver?

I can post the picture late tomorrow. Actually it is quite simple. There are two holes drilled and tapped into the side of the receiver. The screws are short and have fine threads. The rifle is chambered for the 32-40. It is a beautiful barrel, inside and out.
