	Some of you may remember a custom Winchester Low Wall rifle I asked questions about a few weeks ago. After some long negotiations and debate with the shop owner, I bought it. I have carefully disassembled the action to clean the gunk out of it as well as give the stocks a nice coat of lemon oil. I removed the Swiss buttplate and here's what I found ...

	Yes, I always disassemble every gun I purchase, in hopes of finding a name, or slip of paper hidden. So far found one old Marlin with a green company sticker under the buttstock. The name of the company was "Metropolitan Goldstock's Jewelers and Sporting Goods" and I believe the address was somewhere in Northern New York. Maybe Syracuse, or Buffalo? Have to check my records, as I kept the sticker and a piece of paper I wrote the info on. The phone number was only 5 digits, so guessing it was 1920's or earlier? Have found names stamped into metal or wood under forearms, or buttplates.

	I once found a business card, "Lyle Corcoran, Hollywood Gun Shop", and on the back was written, "Boss 28 ga double" and an address in Pasadena. Wouldn't you like to know the rest of that story? And another time, elk licenses for Wyoming for 1925-26-27. This under the buttplate of a 25 Remington pump gun. Hardly what we would consider an elk rifle these days. Now, everyone seems to think they're undergunned if they don't have something with Magnum on it somewhere. Neat bits of history, though.

	Nothing to do with single shots, but virtually every surplus Swiss K-31 carbine that has made it to this country has been found to have a handwritten slip under the buttplate with a soldier's name on it.

	My K-31 has such a slip. Also the guy's phone number. Seems to me it would be embarrassing to get a phone call saying "Hey, Klaus, you forgot your rifle."

Yes and nearly all distributors removed the hand written slips and sold them separately. My K-31 was sans a slip of paper

	When I purchased a High Wall from Chuck Bordman's estate it came with a case. Under the top foam was a few 50 ft rimfire targets and a letter from the ASSRA addressed to Bill Crane at the Tacoma Rifle and Revolver club outlining the ASSRA's proposal for a national 100 shot offhand championship. It discussed possible prizes and included a second page with the rules Jack

	You have a treasure there sir.... Those types of rifles just aren't found in the south. The info in the stock is icing on the cake in my book. What caliber? JMH
