rings for unertl bases

Hello; Not sure if this is in the right forum, so please move if not.

I have a BSA Martini cadet that is chambered in .22 K Hornet.. While I would really love to have a Unertl or Fecker ( maybe old lyman, litschert, etc) scope, my pocket book just can't afford the prices they are getting, at least for now. I am looking for rings that would fit the unertl bases I have on the gun now, then I will also look for a long tubed scope that could be used with the 7"+ spacing. Maybe I can get a Unertl, later. I also thought that another option might be trying to find a rail that would fit the hole spacing, then I could use whatever scope I choose.  Any thoughts are greatly appreciated

I have a Win LW that has 7,2" spaced holes for Unertl bases and am doing the following to allow use of 1" modern scopes.

Midway USA sells the following blank Picattiny rail, 12 inches long, that I am having screw holes drilled with same spacing as 7,2 " spacing holes already drilled. Barrel on this rifle has uniform slope so rail will sit flat on barrel. I will use the widely available Weaver 1" rings or possibly 1" Picattiny rings. With a 12" rail I can use quite a variety of scopes I already have, even some 3/4" ones that I have filler rings for. I also have a good selection of standard Unertl blocks I bought from Steve Earlie ( (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)) if I want use Unertl or MVA 3/4" external adjustment scopes on this rifle.

Get two blocks of steel, cut them to the approximate size of your existing Unertl bases, drill them to match your existing hole spacings, and dovetail the tops of the two blocks to match the dimensions of standard grooved 22RF receivers, and you can use the 22 scope rings.

Or, you could just buy one of my scope adaptors and be shooting it a few days. $110 shipped

Frank's adapter is a fine investment. Looks good. Fits like a glove. Works as advertised. I recommend it highly.

My first choice would be to go with Frank's adapter. 2nd choice would be to buy a less expensive Lyman scope like the 438. They come with mounts that fit the Unertl bases, and are a pretty decent scope, but only 4x. Of course they're long out of production, but I see them fairly often on Ebay, gun shows, and occasionally here in the for sale section. They run in the $150-$200 range with mounts. They can go a lot more, but I wouldn't get my money.

Griz next time you need a blank visit their Web Site the blank I shared simply as an example is 36 inches long and almost ten dollars less than you paid for your 12 inch long from Midway. When you have time check out their site they also have rails all ready made to fit several different rifles and requiring no additional work. I once bought a blank from Brownells several years back and it came in their packaging, who they purchased it from, how I came accross their Web site and their price for the same of which was a whole whole lot less to say the least.

Thanks, JL for reviving this.

I'm right now running another batch of my scope adapters, if any one needs one.

My CPA had Unertl bases at 7.2 inches.

I could use either my Unertl scope or switch it to my 36T Weaver using the same bases.

The Weaver scope was mounted on Warne Scope rings for 22 Rimfires.

The rimfire scope rings fit the Unertl blocks.

Eye relief was perfect for both scopes.

Dave is that a Weaver 36X I had hoped to do the same way back when I had my 12X42 NFBR but didn't have enough room in the tube. You have the perfect answer to the question if it might possibly work for everyone by a simple change of the scope and the Weaver T's are still very reasonably priced as well being excellent target scopes and why I asked.

22 rings fit but you have to have a scope with enough tube length to still slide back far enough for correct eye relief. I’ve used longer unertl bases to help allow this.

To get the right eye relief for the Weaver 36T I had to slide it a bit back on the front base and space the rings as far apart as possible on the scope - but it worked.

BLK Technologies also makes various adapters but they too raise the height of the scope if of no concern.

This is what my adapter looks like, mounted on 2 of my HW's.

The rings are the old Weaver, see through rings. Note the way the Weaver rail is reversible to get better eye relief.

Blank base noted by J Louis above is not Picatinny rail, so not suited for what I put together. Use of Picatinny rail and Picatinny rings assures good resistance to forces of recoil and general banging around. My rifles are for hunting, NOT for benching or other target shooting. Mine need to be able to withstand substantial recoil and routine knocks from days and days afield with gun slung over shoulder, etc., as well as days of horse travel with rifle in scabbards.

In addition, I have to use offset mounts from Steve Earlie so that I can use my left eye even though I shoot off right shoulder. A 12 inch piece of Picatinny rail gives me a lot more flexibility for mounting a diversity of scopes on any given rifle than will a 6 inch piece. So far, the angular force vectors of recoil that are a natural feature of offset mounts have not been loosening my mounts.

What I have learned from this thread, that I was not aware of, is that 22RF clamp-on mounts can be used on Unertl blocks. For low-recoiling rifles that looks like a good alternative solution/addition to offset mounts.

One surprise has been that factory mounting hole spacing on one hunting rifle is same as for rear Unertl blocks, which made it easy to use Steve Earlie's offset mounts. Also appears that factory hole spacing on another rifle is same or very close to that for front Unertl blocks. Smiley
