Griz next time you need a blank visit their Web Site the blank I shared simply as an example is 36 inches long and almost ten dollars less than you paid for your 12 inch long from Midway.

Blank base noted by J Louis above is not Picatinny rail, so not suited for what I put together. Use of Picatinny rail and Picatinny rings assures good resistance to forces of recoil and general banging around. My rifles are for hunting, NOT for benching or other target shooting. Mine need to be able to withstand substantial recoil and routine knocks from days and days afield with gun slung over shoulder, etc., as well as days of horse travel with rifle in scabbards.
In addition, I have to use offset mounts from Steve Earlie so that I can use my left eye even though I shoot off right shoulder. A 12 inch piece of Picatinny rail gives me a lot more flexibility for mounting a diversity of scopes on any given rifle than will a 6 inch piece. So far, the angular force vectors of recoil that are a natural feature of offset mounts have not been loosening my mounts.
What I have learned from this thread, that I was not aware of, is that 22RF clamp-on mounts can be used on Unertl blocks. For low-recoiling rifles that looks like a good alternative solution/addition to offset mounts.
One surprise has been that factory mounting hole spacing on one hunting rifle is same as for rear Unertl blocks, which made it easy to use Steve Earlie's offset mounts. Also appears that factory hole spacing on another rifle is same or very close to that for front Unertl blocks.
