28-30-120 learning curve

I have an original Stevens 44 1/2 on28-30-120 and am learning to shoot this cartridge and gun.

Currently loading the Lyman 120 grain bullet (20:1) with 13.5 grains of 4227 and SPG lube.  The cases are smoked almost to the rim (indicates to me that the pressure is too low to allow the case to expand to seal).  But the load is accurate.

Two questions:

1.  What load would you suggest?

2.  Is the SPG lube too soft?  Suggestions?

Loving this adventure into the past.  Great little cartridge IMO.

I’d start by belling the case mouth enough so that they scrape a little and seal the chamber well that will let your brass expand and fill the chamber. You do not say if you are shooting fixed or breech-seated but the case belling should work for both.
Second SPG is not too soft.

Also, have you annealed the case necks? Properly annealed necks will expand and seal the chamber more readily.

I've been shooting the 28-30 with 300MP and small pistol magnum primers. I'd start in the 12 grain area. It shoots in the 240's at 200yds

In addition to belling, I would shoot 3 or 4 grains of Bullseye with toilet paper wading over it and the last piece wetted to fireform.  In my 33-47, I shoot 12.25 grs 4227.  I get a little smoking around the mouth after a few shots, but when I quickly push the loaded case in behind the bullet, the air compression pops it back out 3/16 to 1/4 inch.

Switch to a 140 (+/-) grain bullet; same load.

Hello
I built a Stevens 044 1/2 for my wife several years ago, it is chambered in 28-30-120. The only brass I could find in those days was Bertran. Paul Shuttleworth loaned me a sizing die. Jerry Barnett was a personal friend and made a mold for me, it casts 131gr at 25 to 1. I use small rifle primer & 12gr IMR 4227. Never saw Jerry wear anything but bibs, he would get a laugh out of being called a gentleman.

I started out with the Lyman 285221, 120 grains, some years ago.  But I stumbled onto a Hoch 140 grain mould about 10 years back.  Have not used the Lyman mould since.  No comparison, either at the lead pot or at the range.

My bullet is 135 grains. Took measurements from an old Pope mold and had one made by Accurate.
