Need help identifying a custom Low Wall

Print Post
I went into a local shop today and found an interesting Winchester Low Wall gallery rifle in .22 Short. It has a 28" #2 barrel.  The bore is good to very good.  There is no serial number on the lower tang. The lower tang is bent and has double set triggers. The curve of the double-set triggers doesn't look factory but they are nice. The lever has an added finger loop on the bottom and the end of the loop has a small wood block added similar to a Maynard.

The forend is checkered. The checkering isn't perfectly straight but looks decent. The buttstock is uncheckered and perch belly.

The rifle looks like it's been together for a long time. Any thoughts and opinions of gunmaker and value are appreciated.

No idea on maker but those triggers look like they came off a tennessee mountain rifle. People like low walls and it has good curb appeal. It would be a hard gun to build for less then 2k or so but in .22 short ? I think its cute

I've bought 8 or 9 .22 1885's over the last two years or so and I find it hard to put a value it.

Joe, that Fore End looks like an original that has been set back.
The Checkering pattern looks like Winchester but having been set back it brought the checkering right back to the face of the action. The case colors also are quite nice and may? be original colors. All in all it is a quite pleasing piece. The Stock is neat and makes use of a straight grip Lower Tang with the Wood addition to the lever effectively gives a Pistol Grip feel. That Rifle in this area would not last long on a Dealers shelf. HTH

I don't always like how 'custom' guns end up- but sometimes, sometimes one comes along that's so nice I get a little envious. This sure looks like one of 'em. Congratulations on fine taste and good fortune.

A $4 or 5 hundred Winchester tang sight.  Nicely shaped perch-belly, but the checkering is amateurish.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

That's a lovely little Low Wall Joe! I like everything about it; even the .22 Short caliber! It appears to be the work of a skilled craftsman, but I haven't a guess as to who that might be!
I'd sure have to take it home too!

I think it dates from the days of the 75-foot indoor gallery offhand matches; 1880s to before WW1.  I would grab it in a heartbeat.

When this lovely little rifle was put together, one could likely still get .22 Shorts, especially those loaded with Lesmoke, that were death to bullseyes at gallery distances.  Even today, with the right ammo, I'd bet it will still do the job!

Ordinary CCI Target Shorts are 97 % as accurate as the old Lesmok loaded stuff and are more-or-less available.  Save the old stuff for the time when your offhand accuracy is 97 % as good as the old masters.

I agree that your low wall was probably a pre-WW I build, most probably for use in gallery matches.  To me it is a piece of History you can shoot... Win-win!!  Congratulations on a great find.

It is a Zettler Brothers rifle made in NYC.
