2 Questions: Sights & Powder (OE, 1 1/2 and 2f)

Gonna stop in at BA and had some questions I hope get answered first.

First Questiin:  On Olde E, would appreciate your sharing experiences with 1.5 and/or 2f.    I'm mostly shooting Black in 38-50 and a couple 40-65s the rest of this year and next.    Been shooting 1 1/2 in the 38-50 and a 40-63.    Any recommendations based on your experience could save me $$.    I understand we all have to do our own homework but no crime in copying notes here.    I could play it safe and just stick with 1 1/2 but if anyone reports better results with 2f in their 40-65 then may save time along with money by buying half of each.

Second Questiion:   Thinking about a Jim Kelley sight for a Cody.   My original Ballards have 9-40 tang treads for the rear sight.   My Cosy is down south so can't check threads.    Anyone know if they are 8-40 or 9-40?

Thanks in advance.  Trying to wait till tomorrow before running down to Ponderea so I'll check back this evening.

Best Regards,
John

Well then, before heading south I guess I'll play it safe and just buy a pound of 2f to test instead of buying half of each.

Hey, Sgt!  I do not have any experience with the 38-50, but .40-65 I do.  I am thinking you will be find wit the 1 1/2.  I use 1 1/2 Swiss in my .40-65, .45-70 and .45-90.  It does well in all of those calibers.

For starting loads for the .40-65 start with making about 10 rounds with 55 grs, 56, 57, 58, 59 and 60 grains.  You did not mention what weight of bullet you will be using, but with anywhere from 400 gr to 450 gr bullet this should be an OK starting load for you.  Use a .030 wad between the powder and lead bullet to start.  Go shoot them and report the results.  One of those or maybe two will have better grouping.  Once you find that better load, you can play with the compression and primer choices.
Hope this helps. Major

Thanks Major,   Had to drive to Sandpoint so did the deed.    Got a helpful PM while I was waiting on a friend there in BA.    But I'd already carted 6lbs of each out to the truck:-).

I'll haul it back to OK in November and be sure to dig this post up and add test results after I get a restart down south.

I'm hoping to make one more of the matches in OKC before they close out the season.   That will be shot with what's loaded now in the 38-50.    Anxious to give that 40-65 a whirl though.    Just got it this summer.

Btw... Only suitable mold I have today is the Snover.    I'm hoping to get a PJ eventually.

John,
The Snover will be a good starting point with your 40-65.
Tho, I have since moved on to a couple bullets of my own design-a Elliptical Minigroove, and a Elliptical PP which shoot Very Well, I got good
initial service out of the Snover.
