Bullet choice for a 38-55 Uberty ? High Wall

I have a friend with one of these rifles and was wondering if anyone has come up with a good accurate bullet for this gun.
I can pass on any information so that he can make an informed decision, rather than constant experimenting with untried moulds.
Mike.

Many or maybe most of the Uberti 38-55 barrels have an oversize bore. Your friend will most likely need to have a mold custom made. He definitely needs to slug the bore.

I think the Pedersoli High Wall uses a Uberti action but a Pedersoli barrel. As far as I know the Uberti High Walls were fitted with their own barrel. Uberti was making these long before the association with Pedersoli where Pedersoli got the Uberti High Wall action and Uberti got the Pedersoli Sharps action. Anyway, my Uberti after several thousand shots of experimenting with different bullets decided it liked the NEI 245379 GC with 14.5 grains of SR 4759 which gave me a 10 shot group at 200 of 2.7 inches. The barrel has the original spec'ed groove dimensions (.379) and twist (IIRC 18) which limit the bullet choices. The NEI mould that I found also casts a 310 grain bullet in the second cavity but it doesn't shoot as well as the 245.

A friend of mine bought one of these a few years back. He finally sent it down the line after trying a variety of bullets and ending up frustrated. The specimen in his hands had an 18" twist and a bore size of about .383 as I recall. All wrong in my estimation for this cartridge, bore was too big and twist too slow.

He did get some reasonable groups by using the Saeco flat nosed breech seat bullet. The base band of this bullet measured .383 as I recall. This combination was never going to achieve the consistent fine accuracy he was hoping for, but it was as good as it was going to get; acceptable for steel gongs, not for fine paper punching.

If your rifle has the same bore size and twist as the example I site, IHMO, to obtain best performance Your going end up getting a custom mold with a base band measuring .384 or so, weighing around 250 grains. I wish you success.

I have a Uberti High wall in 38-55, with a groove diameter or .382. I got along for a while with the Saeco tapered bullets which sometimes gave me the diameter I needed but lately I have been using custom molds by Accurate molds. Accurate will sell you a double cavity mold which will give you the diameter you need for the alloy you are using for about $100. Accurate Molds $300J and 315J were made to my specifications.
With a bullet of the proper size and a little load development, you can compete with the Uberti. Attached are photos of targets shot at regional competition at 200 yds, one with irons and two with scope. YMMV
