Remington rolling block no 2 25-25 stevens
Sep 6th, 2016 at 10:23pm
Print Post

Hi, first time posting, I recently purchased a no. 2 RB ser# 38xxx, Reminton Arms Co. Ilion NY USA.  Bottom of barrel stamped 25-25, I did a chamber cast, it is a 25-25 Stevens, cannot find anything on the 25-25 Stevens in a #2 RB on the net. Anyone know of any other #2s in this caliber. Any reply would be appreciated.

none of my sources mention  a #2 in 25-25.   Dehaas's book mentions both 25-20 cartridges, but not yours.   The other book says they were chambered in calibers from .22- .38 ( rimfires I  suspect).  You could  have a rebarrel or something unique.  Would love to see a photo or two.

The #2 was chambered in .38RF, but also in .38-40 cartridges. A number of them in .32-20, and I've seen them in .25-20SS. Wouldn't be surprised at one in the .25-25 Stevens, but it's probably a rare chambering.
Marcot's book shows calibers from .22 Maynard CF to .38-40 WCF. Also shows pictures of #2's in .44 Extra Long CF., .38 Extra Long CF, .25-20SS, and the .25 Stevens RF. So a .25-25 isn't out of the realm of possibility.

Marcot's book, on the left hand side of page 272, has a list of chamberings Remington advertised as available for the #2, and the 25-25 is among those shown.

Yrag,
Your pictures are showing up ok.
Nice #2!
Hope the bore looks as good as the rest of the rifle
It has the later production forearm with the ebony tip insert, instead of the earlier steel tip.
What does the barrel address marking look like?

Oops! All three of your pictures just disappeared...

Thanks to all for responding to my post. I Checked the serial number on the tang, barrel, front and rear stock all the same.
Here are a couple of pics, you will see the 25-25 mark on one.
Now I need brass and dies, got to get busy. One more question can I shoot 25-21 out of this rifle?

BP,
Thanks for the info, the bore looks very good. You asked about the address marking ?  You mean "Remington Arms Co. Ilion NY USA."
Do you know if the 25-25 will also shoot the 25-21 ammo?
I was thinking that I could purchase 25-25 dies and also reload the 25-21, is this a pipe dream?

Real nice looking #2  Smiley, from all the data I can muster the 25-21SS appears to be a shorter version of the case so you could shoot a longer .25 caliber bullet? what's your twist rate? Try Greenhill's formula and see if you could get away with a longer  bullet?  I made a mold to cast cores for PP in my 25-21 but I haven't had time to make any or experiment - hoping to this winter... keep us posted with what works.Yrag wrote on Sep 7th, 2016 at 5:44pm:

Shooting the .25-21 in the .25-25 is fine. Just like shooting .22 shorts in a .22 long rifle chamber or .44 Specials in a .44 Mag. Sounds like you have a really rare chambering there. The little .25's are fun to shoot.

Slumlord

Thank you, that is great to hear, I also could use some advice on reloading dies, if I purchase the 25-25 dies can I use them to reload 25-21 ammo, like I do with 32 S&W, 32 H&R etc.

Thanks Again

C&H 4D has the dies, and might as well buy the correct .25-25 dies, even if you have some .25-21 brass. You can shoot the shorter brass, but if you haven't purchased brass yet it's better to use the correct brass.

Thank you for the advice, it makes sense to own the correct dies.
Could  they be used to also reload 25-21?

Yes, I would guess they could, but wouldn't put any crimp on the case mouth. I don't crimp the mouth so it wouldn't bother me.
