.22 rimfire at 200 yds

My rifle likes Federal 711B and 900 (better) at 100 yards.  I'm wondering if the Federal HV Match (719) at 1200 fps would do better at 200 yards.  Anyone have some experience to share?

Several folks who shoot our 200m .22LR matches shoot the Fed HV target ammo and do well. However, the best shooters (highest scores) mostly shoot the best ammo (high end Eley, Lapua, etc. target ammo). Just like our CF rifles, .22LR rifles are particular and what works best in one doesn't work that well in the next. My DZ Arms Hepburn with Shilen rachet-rifled barrel does not like either of the Fed loads.

Thank you for the counsel. My Cody Ballard does nicely with the 900, but it might be time to experiment some more. Mostly I'm wondering if the HV would do better at 200 than the standard velocity.  I suspect not, figuring when it drops below the sound barrier it will create a wobble. When I get a chance I'll give it a try.

Gents,

I can't speak specifically for 200 yards, but the most consistent accuracy (in numerous rifles) at our 300 yard buffalo matches has been with RWS R100.

I will say the all/most of the 200 yd 22 guys use a standard velocity ammo.   None of it is cheap but the scores show alot.
240 (or more) out of 250 at 200 yds is nothing to sneeze at.

We shoot .22 rimfire at 200 frequently, our problems being wind & mirage.  Our most recent 30-shot match from the bench was won (by 1 point) by a shooter using Eley Club.  IIRC, the score was 641 out of a 750 possible.  I shot a 640-1c using SK Rifle Match.  A close 3rd went to a shooter using Norma Match.  Last place was a 444, to a shooter using Remington Golden Bullets (something like that) out of a big Walmartish (Walmartian?)box.

With our consistent mirage problems, using the really high end stuff is somewhat wasteful.  Save that stuff for the BR-50 and the 100-yard matches.

I should add that those shooting the high scores had baseball (or maybe softball)-sized groups, but all were centered 4+ inches to the left.  Had we been able to read the mirage better, the scores would have been higher.  The Walmartian ammo shot all over the target, but with more holes to the left than to the right.

I appreciate and offer my thanks for each of your responses. I'm not in a location where I've relatively easy access to 200 yard experimentation.  Hardly access to the world as most of you know it. When I can pick up some Tennex, I'll try it. Next month Beeson is likely to see me shooting Federal 900 for record. Watch for it!

If I had Tennex, I would not waste it in 200-yard experimentation.  Wolf ME is plenty good.

Thanks to all for the responses. A humbling Beeson report is in order.  Fed 900 holds elevation just fine at 200 and spreads about a foot horizontally; kind of like some of my centerfire targets. Apparently the enthusiasm demonstrated by the wind flags indicated something more than celebration.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I use PMC Target in my Cody Ballard, and it has shot well for me out to 300 yds. I have a couple cases of it, but unsure if it's still available, as these are 20 yrs. old.

At 20 years old, how is the accuracy holding up?  I have some questions about shelf life.  Probably should start another topic.

Results will only come from exhaustive testing. Maybe!
SSShooter- You are spot on. "22 rifles are particular and what works best in one may not work that well in another"
Hayface- I've seen some good groups using RWS R100. Hope to confirm with "serious" testing soon.
waterman - I test everything I can obtain in reasonable quantity. You never know what you may learn. Consider the great results using Eley Match as evidenced by the ASSRA Results equipment lists. Also note Laurie Gapko's standing 200 yd score record using Fiocci V320.
To further confuse the issue, I have found that a specific ammunition that excels on one occasion may not be best on another. Altitude, temp., humidity, barometric pressure, etc.
If I ever find the "best" ammo., it will be in my dreams!

Wow! It sure looks like the pricey stuff pays nice dividends in many instances. Thanks for the detailed info.

They say that "the proof is in the pudding", so I think that this is a nice serving of "pudding". The less expensive/high velocity ammo is fine for plinking, but this list shows what it takes to win matches.
