Info needed on Stevens Favorite 1889
Aug 19th, 2016 at 4:17pm
Print Post
I've recently come across a Stevens Favorite 1889 (early model).  The receiver, barrel and stock are in pretty good shape but the action needs to be rebuilt, especially the extractor.  Are there manuals and/or diagrams available for this model.  Also what are good sources for parts.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Best parts source is Wisners Gun Parts. Ebay often has used parts, if you know what you need and recognise it.

Wisner has a decent breakdown of it on their website. Its a pretty simple action. If you have problems just ask here. l

Yes, pictures would help a lot.  In the 1889 there are two styles of mainspring, for example, although the early one is pretty rare.   Depending on the style of spring, the hammers are different.  There are 7 o'clock and 6 o'clock extractors.

Wisner's has pretty much everything you'll need, but their catalog is a little confusing.  So is deHaas' drawing, so ask.

Not on the website (that I can find), but on paper, Wisner has available a very clear & well executed drawing of the 4 Favorite mainsprings that leave no doubt as to which is which. A copy was sent me when I ordered one of these springs.  (Although the spring itself, the #1 variation, is WAY over-strong, and should have been ground down before I installed it.)

If you're again the victim of discrimination, I'll make a copy.  Don't know why, since he went to the trouble of having the drawing made, that it doesn't post it on the website.

It has the lazy S flat spring with the heavy lug stop; as shown in the diagram.  It also has a 7 o'clock extractor.  I will post some pictures.

OK, if you buy a mainspring what Wisner will ship you is a spring suitable for the Model 44.  The length and profile are identical.  BUT, the metal they formed it from is considerably too thick, as compared with a very early Favorite that I just rehabilitated.  The spring is thus way way too stiff.   I narrowed the spring on a belt sander until it felt right.
The hammer is unique to that spring style.  Is the trigger pull OK?

OK now I have a new problem.  In dismantling the rifle, the bottom stock tang broke off.  Evidently it was ready to go anyway because the inside of the break is mostly rusted.  Is there any way to repair this or do I need to find a new/old receiver.  Right now all the serial numbers match.  Pics below. Broken tang.  That is the worst.  I don't know, but it's possible that these early Favorites were malleable iron castings, which makes them impossible to weld.  It could be brazed back into place, and be as strong as new, but you would have to make a jig to hold the two parts in alignment, and the repaired receiver could not be case hardened afterward.

Sad as I would be to have to break up a matching serial number set, I'd be looking for another receiver, and that will be very hard to find in this early style.   1894 receivers are much more common, and you could make up a bitza* using one.

*bitza - bits a' this and bits a' that,  an archaic term from my British motorcycle building days.

That mainspring doesn't look right.  It shouldn't be so close to the upper tang.  Wonder if it's a Parkenfarker replacement.

Having been a fully satisfied customer several times, I can shamelessly recommend Peter Nagel, an advertiser in our journal, as a possibility for welding your tang.  His business is called Restorative Welding and you can google his name or his business, or you can contact him via email, snail-mail, or phone at:

Good luck!
