Hard Lube in BP Loads

Does the type of lube used on bullets matter if you wipe after every shot?  If lube in black powder loads functions to keep fouling soft, does it matter what kind of lube is used if the bore is wiped every time?  Hard cast bullets come with a hard lube that I have heard shooters will remove and re-lube them with something softer.  Does this make sense?  Velocity does not exceed 1,400 fps.  Thanks.

They say that some lubed just do not mix well with BP. I would take a guess and say that the harder lubes that work well with smokeless loads may leave something in the barrel that is maybe a bit on the nasty side to wipe out. But this is just a guess and I have been wrong  before. I have always used softer lubes and mostly home made. I think that the best way to find out is to load up 10 or so and try them. They will either work or not work. The big difference might just work out to be the number of patched you have to use to get the barrel as clean as you would like.
If you do test the hard lube, please report back on your findings.

Black powder bullet lube is formulated to leave the fouling softer, thereby facilitating cleaning, and also to stop leading.
I use SPG as do many others, I can't be bothered making up experimental lubes, that may, or may not work, just to save a dollar, a pound of SPG goes a long, long way.
You might try just dipping the bullets in Lee liquid alox and trying that, this will probably prevent leading, but do nothing for the softening of the powder fouling. Then you can see if the fouling wipes out OK with  damp patching. It's really a case of suck it and see.

You won't need 10 to find out this won't work, after the first shot you'll need a hammer to get the cleaning or wiping rod thru the barrel.

In my Ballard .25-25 Stevens, I am using Swiss 3FG & wiping after each shot with damp patch.  SPG lube.  I was noticing a hard baked on fouling right in front of chamber at times & so I added a 1/16" grease cookie of SPG.  This eliminated hard spot.  A dry patch after one shot comes out covered in what looks like chunks of hard fouling..but is in fact very soft and greasy.  As for myself, I find soft is better with black.
