Joe, Sludge is sludge.  Looks just like septic tank sludge  Roll Eyes

When I tried Marvelux, it rusted everything within half a mile!  Angry

The best thing I ever used to clean lead was activated charcoal; you can get it from the pet store. Pour some on top of the lead and let it sit a few minutes, as it will hold moisture. After it has had some time to dry out stir it in well and then just scrape it off the top.

While we're on this subject, how do you guys clean the cruddy stuff that covers the side of the pot after many uses. I use a good-sized iron pan that I've had for years. I don't have much trouble casting- it doesn't seem to be other than stuck on crap. But, I keep having this niggling worry that someday it'll start to cause problems and so I'd like to head if off at the pass.
I'm sorta worried about disturbing it and leaving it be, both. What do you do?

and if you can't afford that, use a 3/4x3/4 x 10" stirring rod (cut from a 3/4" board).  Watch the moisture content.

It just works.

I use a wire brush on a drll motor once in a while.  I have a small ball type wire brush that will fit in my Lyman ladle too.  I don't remember where i got that one.

I use a drill bit in the spout occasionally too.

Well, I guess I can give that a try.
Like I say, so far (lots of years) it has stayed in use that way. But, I worry that someday I'd scrape some loose with the spoon and start it coming free in the mix like a cheap paint job. Maybe get out the ol' wire brush and clean it up is a good thing to do tomorrow. If I get it clean maybe my wife will want it back.  Roll Eyes Nah, it's pretty heavy- that's why she gave it to me in the first place.
Thank you for the advice- can always count on the fellows around here.
