One quick way is to look at the sides of the block above the receiver--44s are absolutely flat and higher, 44-1/2s have a distinctly rounded shape.

If you can work the lever and see the bottom arms of the breech block descend from below the action, it's a 44 1/2.

The 44 has a transverse screw through the receiver above and forward of the lever pivot screw where the 44 1/2 has none.  This is the pivot for the swinging breech block on the 44.

Is this scope mounted in Stevens' incredibly rare double-micrometer rear mount--the original screwed-on type, before dovetailed blocks were introduced about 1905?

There is a exception to the above. If it was made as a 22RF and had a ejector, they added that screw to the 44 1/2, as that's what the ejector, spring and plunger, has to bare against to allow for ejection.

If you can operate the lever or see a picture with it open, the "legs" of the BB will tell what it is.
