Marking brass

I have two rifles in 32-40, my CPA and a Sharps-Borchardt.  It was suggested that I should keep the brass separate because the chambers are likely a bit different.  Since the Borchardt is new i used magic marker on the case head but that isn't going to last.  It seems logical to keep the brass separate but how do folks Mark the brass?  I messed atound in the shop and either filing or cutting a notch in the rim or drilling one or two small and shallow holes in the case head seems to be practical.

Any suggestions?

Dave

As far as indexing the brass...I just use one of the case head stamps ie: WW on the winchester Brass Etc.

I believe it's a good idea to keep separate Brass for each rifle even of the same caliber...Normally the chambers will be cut somewhat different dimensions.

I keep my brass in cartridge boxes (plastic MTM boxes) and mark the boxes on an Avery label which rifle they are for, how many times loaded, and interspersed among the hash marks for loading, when they were annealed.

It is a bit more trouble to keep boxes of brass separated during cleaning, but if I'm mixing boxes in the tumbler, I'll mark the primers of one box with a carbide scribe so that I can separate them after tumbling.

I have 4 rifles in 38-55.  One uses W-W brass, one uses long Starline, and two use short Starline. For the two with distinct brass, separating is simply by sorting headstamps.

If you do have any W-W brass, you might reserve it for one rifle and use reformed Starline 38-55 for the other. If not, a little more initial expense for the long brass, but reform short Starline for one rifle and long for the other (trimmed to the appropriate length of course).

I keep my loaded ammo marked on the plastic box for which gun it's loaded for. Once fired, it goes back in the same box. After I get home the brass gets deprimed and cleaned. While it's in the tumbler the empty box stays by the tumbler and returned to the box for later reloading. So I don't worry about marking the brass, but keep it sorted all the time.
It takes a bit more time to tumble brass in smaller quantities, but I prefer doing that, and not mixing the brass up.

In one of my books, there is a formula, to turn brass black. You could dip the heads in that and it should make it possible to keep them seperate.

If you like, I'll look the formula up.

I like to use a small punch mark right in front of the rim on the web, add a little black majic marker in the hole and then sand or file off the burr raised and it leaves a nice little dot. I got tired of holding the case up high enough to find a spot on the bottom of the rim to use. I used to file a little V in the rim until I read it could hurt accurracy. That little dot is also starring you right in the face when dropping the powder charge and for me it makes it easier to index the case into the chamber. In the OP's case he could use one dot for one rifle and two for the other. The majic marker is not really required the dot is clealy visable with out it.

I hope this somewhat helpfull.

I mark any I want marked by a file notch on the edge of the rim. More than one if necessary.

Mine are tumbled in wet ceramic media and I use a file to mark the rims in different places for different guns and put a piece of masking tape on the box with the file mark. Some weekend I may shoot 3 different 40/65s and this way when I get home it all goes in one tumbler and gets separated after I dry them

Notching the rims works for identification - also works for indexing the cases in the chamber

LOL!  I notched rims of some brass for one of my Lovells.  Then during a long hiatus when I didn't shoot any of them, I forgot which rifle the notched brass was for.   Roll Eyes   Now I just keep the brass in separate, labelled boxes.  And each Lovell has a separate, marked ammo can for its' special tools, bullets, etc.   And only one Lovell comes out to play on any given day.

I have marked my Brass to identify the actual Rifle.
1) T stamped on the base for my Takedown Hiwall 32-40
2) 4 for my first Number 4 Barrel Hiwall 38-55
3) 3 for my 32-40 #3 barrel Hiwall
4) P for my Pope Hiwall
5) H for my Home Talent Hiwall 32-40.

And so on, It does not have to be stamped heavy the Brass takes the stamp easily. The ID can be used for orientation also
if it is wished. HTH Regards FITZ. Smiley

I keep a wooden block drilled for the case needed for the gun with 12 holes in it. I keep a dozen cases for the gun in the shooting kit for each gun.
If your one of those guys who lands up a couple of hundred at home just mark the box with a lable maker.

if the bottom of the headstamp doesn't polish out in the tumbler then different
colored lacquer should work.

I only have one 32-20 CPA, but two different lots (match years) of Starline brass, segregated by one and two notches in the rim.  the notches make it easier to index them in the wet tumbler as well.... Roll Eyes
