Peabody carbine

A shooter at the range today had a Peabody carbine with the neatest splice in the stock ever seen. No seam at all you would swear it was one piece of wood. With the buttplate removed the thru bolt hole is also perfect.
Anyone ever seen one like it? It looks like a factory stock job. But one would wonder why?
