Some confusion seems to arise from how the lead alloy ratios are stated. For instance, 1/20 would be 5% tin whereas 20/1would be 20 parts lead to 1 part tin. In the 70's I had a smelter in Chicago blend 1/20 alloy for me, they referred to it as 95%/5%. Those were the days .50 cents per pound in 1000lb lots. In my opinion whether the alloy is 5% tin or 5.26% tin don't amount to a hill of beans.

My head is starting to hurt. I better keep on casting, and forget about testing hardness.

That makes Sense...20/1 VS. 1/20..I use 20/1

Doubt if it matters much, but 19 lead and 1 tin is 5%.  20 & 1 is 4.2%  Cool

I dunno about y'all arguing over math, but I found a video explaining the pencil test method.

I still use a pencil for math now and then.

I keep a 6B drawing pencil in my glove box.  If it scratches the lead easily it is soft enough for me.
