I once built a 38-55 with a 14 twist on a Browning BPCR and with 29 grains of H-4895 it would stabilize a 360 grain elliptical bullet to 300 yards. That's all the farther I can shoot at my House. My buddy owns it now and he still shoots the same bullet with smokeless and knocks the Rams over quite well.

If your looking for a comfortable load, for no longer ranges than 300 yards, I would go with Unique.

10 - 12 gr of Unique tames the 45/70's recoil, quite a bit, BSed or fixed.

Up to that range, a 18 twist, will stabilize a 310 gr bullet in the 1250 fps range. I don't believe a 350 gr bullet would have any issues with a 14 twist up to 300 yds either.

Using Unique and the heaviest of bullets in the 38/55 is not advisable, better to forget that notion and use IMR 4198, Reloder 7 or a similar powder. Unique's burn rate is too fast and a errant double charge, which can easily happen, will bring certain disaster.

I agree with Premod 70 and would add H-4227 to the list and would concentrate on a 330 to 335 weight bullet.

Try some Black Horn 209 in your 38-55.  I have a CPA rifle with a 1:14 twist that shoots 355 gr cast out to 500 yards with excellent results. What's nice about that powder is it fills the case.  I use an over powder wad. You will need magnum primers to set it off.  Very good propellant, just a bit more expensive than what you are using.

Thanks.  I'll add H4227, which I have, to the list.  Any thoughts on powder charge?

Great to shift discussion to those slightly slower burning powders for the 335 gr bullet.
Lyman No 4 cast bullet handbook lists a starting load for Re 7
at 24 grains for 1470fps with the 335 bullet.
Re 7 meters well, too.
BTW, my deer load for the 38-55 is a lyman 265 gr over
28 gr Re 7.--about 1600fps.  It shoots clover leafs at 100yds from my T/C Contender carbine and my Marlin 336CB

The only way to find the best load for any rifle is to shoot it. My rule of thumb is to start with a medium load in the manual reduce it by 10% and shoot it once or twice to make sure its safe. Then I will start shooting 3 shot groups and adding about a tenth of a grain of powder for each group. When I see the vertical dispersion shrink I drop to a click at a time and start shooting 5 shot groups. If you are not happy with those groups go up about 80 FPS and try again using the same technique. You should be able to find what your gun likes this way.
Load books are written to give safe loads not the best load it can give you brackets to stay with in but that’s it. If you want an accurate load for your rifle you need to test.

I'll add my voice to the chorus suggesting going to a slower powder. I do see IMR 3031 and Reloader 7 frequently in shops, so availablility seems good. I like 3031 and the Lyman #4 cast bullet manual gives 26.5 to 29 grains of 3031 for the 335 gr Lyman Snover for about 1450 to 1600 fps.
