5.6X50R Magnun loads
Jul 25th, 2016 at 3:26pm
Print Post
I have been working on a Cadet martini in 5.6x50R. One of the forum members was kind enough to loan me the reamer and gauges to chamber a Douglas 22 caliber barrel with 1-8 twist and 26 inch length. My plans are to shoot 65-77 grain bullets mostly and was looking for load reference. I have been told to start with 223 Remington or 222 Remington Magnum starting load data and go from there. That sound like reasonable advise but I am curious if anyone out there has data from a loading manual for the true cartridge. I have bushed the breech block and reduced the firing pin tip as well. I have all the components on the bench ready to go but and am anxious to start working up loads. TIA for any assistance.

5.6 X 50R is the European version or the 222 Rimed. It is a little longer so you should be able to use 222 load data as a start point.

Thanks Rod, I will use a mild load for the 222 mag to fire form cases and break in the barrel. Once that is done I will search for an accuracy load in the rifle.

As far as I know, the case is a bit bigger than the .222 mag, and the round, performance-wise, would be pretty close to the .225 Win...

MartiniBelgian,

Thanks for your input. At this point I will be starting with 222 Magnum medium range loads to break in the barrel. I will be shooting through a chronograph documenting velocities for reference. Once that is done I will start increasing loads watching for any signs of excessive pressure until approaching 222 Magnum maximum loading data. I am not trying for the fastest load, accuracy is my primary goal with heavier (69-77 grain) bullets.

The Hornady 4th Edition loading manual Volume 1 has loading data for the 5.6X50 Magnum  rimless version. It says the rimless version is based on the rimmed version.

The heaviest bullets listed are 60 grains

Max loads are

3031  - 25.5 grains

4064  - 27.8 grains

748   - 28.7 grains

I use Australian ADI powders which are sold I think under another name in the US, for my small frame BSA Martini in 5.6x50R.
My start load was 26.5 grains with AR 2208 and a 55 grain home made open tip bullet with a Corbin Jacket and a big bullet jump to the lands.
1" group first time out and fire forming the cases.
Haven't tried anything else yet.

Tried to get another attachment on the first post but wouldn't take it.
Hope its some use to you.
Powder Equivalents.
Had this chart given to me and the table shows only approximate values within about 5%

Case capacities from Quickload database:

.223 or 5.56x45     =  30 grains water
.222 Rem Magnum = 30.2 grains water
         5.56x50R      = 32 grains water

21.0 grains of Varget would be my starting load for a 75 grain bullet, because Varget is what I like for the .223.  There's any number of other powders aimed at the .223 / 5.56x45 market that will be good.   For those heavy bullets BL-C2 ought to be about right.  Ditto H380, CFE223, 4064, even 4895.

If you're not averse to spending a couple hundred $$, a copy of Quickload will be invaluable.  Much better than fussing about with paper charts that don't cover your heavy bullet choice, don't have a clue what your seating depths will be, and don't know what you think is a safe pressure for that rifle.
