John, it's not really fear that prevents me, nor was it ever likely that exactly. Unless it's that I simply don't want to risk harm to a wonderful old rifle. I have used ball powders in revolvers, but not in a cast rifle. In other types of shooting I've probably shot s--t that might have scared you, never feared it though. Unlike you, and many other competitors, I can't just replace my barrel. Or for that matter, do I want to if I could. I like it because it's a piece of the past. When the subject came up- until recently when some on this list shared information on using ball powder- I didn't know if it was a good idea. Even in a strong rifle, the barrel could be damaged with a mistake. So, I take the more certain, if stodgy, route. I don't shoot four pounds of powder in that rifle in two years. Maybe someday I'll get around to doing something different, but I'm good right now- in fact it's probably me that'll be the limiting factor here. Mr. Hudson, I'm not. And, I'm not giving anybody advice for competing, just for getting a fun day out shooting here and there. You, and others on the competitive edge of the field can have your razor-edge loads, my antique is sufficient to itself. This isn't argumentative, just a different take on shooting than yours is.
