Twister or Puddler

When casting bullets,do you insert the dipper in the sprue hole and rotate the mold to pour or just pour a puddle on the sprue plate?
Find I can get a slightly heavier bullet by twisting (tenths),but get a more consistent weight by puddling.

What I have found works out well for me is to twist. Put the dipper in the hole and rotate everything. I then hold it in place till the sprue freezes. If need be I will pour a puddle on top of the plate to keep it hot enough.

I put the ladle to the hole in the sprue plate and rotate. I hold  the ladle there for maybe 4 or 5 seconds, and then  I roll the ladle away from the hole in the sprue plate leaving a puddle on top of the sprue plate and leaving the ladle sitting on the sprue plate to the side of the hole until the sprue hardens. At that time I put the ladle back into the melt, and then push open the sprue plate and open the mold. So, I guess that would be a twister......

Twister. I'm left handed and it's the only way I can be consistent.
I use the mold and dipper the way right handed folks do- but the steady paw is not the one doing the pouring. It's a good way, producing very even weights for me.

I insert the ladle into the sprue counter sink and rotate mould and ladle vertical, then before the sprue hardens, rock the ladle back and leave a puddle. If I'm using a double cavity, I wait until the puddle frosts, then twist/puddle the second cavity.

I insert the ladle in to the countersink, rotate, crack the ladle and let the rest of the lead run out agitating the puddle and driving out bubbles

Called Flyer,
I am also left handed. Years ago, I drilled and tapped
a hole  in the "cup" of my lyman dipper on the opposite side
from the original. Then threaded the handle rod further, added a lock nut and  screwed the handle,   into the new threaded hole. Last snugged a round head screw into the original handle hole to plug it.
Works great for me

I twist the mold and ladle up, then count to 7, and then leave a small puddle. I have a bench vise next to my furnace where I have a piece of hardwood clamped, and then I hook the sprue plate on the wood and slowly pull it open. That way I get a smooth cutoff.  Wink

Turn mold - spout in sprue hole - 5 second pour - turn mold - create sprue puddle - wait 5 seconds for puddle to frost - cut sprue - glove hand open the mold

I had my Grandsons here last week 13 and 15. They wanted to see me make Bullets. So last Thursday we found time. I went thru the procedure dry run with them explaining right and wrong things to do with HOT lead. Talked about safety, Gloves
Eye Protection, Long Sleeved shirts. Long Pants, Etc. Showed them the Mold Sideways, full dipper, Dipper to Mold in sprue,
held tight, then turn upright ninety degrees held tight, pull Dipper away slowly, create sprue puddle, let cool solid, break sprue, turn Mold upside down and drop off sprue, look at base, turn Mold upright, and open over towel on bench, tap Mold Handle to dislodge Bullet if needed to drop bullet on towel. This whole process took about 20 minutes for each one. And they were casting really nice bullets with only a few that need to go back in the Pot. I had them cast a quantity to take home with them. Total time about two Hours including the pot melt. SOoooooo this is not Rocket Science, just takes a little patience
and attention to detail. I am 75 Yrs Old, have been casting since I was 15 yrs old. The things I had to learn thru experience was Alloy hardness methods and good molds. still have my first Lyman dipper and .22 Hornet mold. REgards, FITZ. Wink

Fitz, one of my granddaughter's is asking the same. Maybe soon I'll get around to the "lesson" before the "shesshun". Thanks for the reminder.
Arnie, I used a mentor's borrowed stuff for a while years ago, before I had my own. Couldn't alter it, of course, so I got used to doing it this way. (we southpaws are very good at that, ain't we?). Anyhow, I got one of the newer ladles that work either way to try. Damned if it wasn't a disaster.  Have got used to things being on a certain side, or moving in certain ways, etc. A while back here we talked of "muscle memory", and I seem to have it in that process Wink

calledflyer, the way it went the older one asked about it when they first got here. I told him I would make time. He asked more than a few times. So when we had some unscheduled time I said we can Cast some bullets today. So lit off the Pot,
had some lunch while it melted. Then went out and sat down and went thru the basics, no rush, quiet. Then I cast a few as
a demonstration. Then I had him go thru the motions, no lead.
Then I let him cast a few. And as always with teaching he did a couple of motions wrong, pointed them out to him and we practiced until he got the handling right. At that point he started cast nice clean bullets, good base, well filled out, and his technique was constant. So then the younger one showed up and wanted to try also. By now I had the lesson plan well organized. So it went better with this one and he progressed faster than the first guy. Primarily because I had got the bugs out of the directions. So they both took home a zip lock bag of bullets. By the way, they are both Home schooled so we should not have an uproar over them bringing "BULLETS" to school.
Remember Safety is upmost. Eye protection, good gloves, long sleeve shirt, long pants to the shoes, full coverage. Good luck with your effort. Regards, FITZ. Smiley

Thanks Fitz, that's all good stuff. I hope that when the occasion arrives, she will be as successful as your fellas were.
They both have done some stuff around the loading bench with supervision. Bullet seating. Some other things. Let 'em each crush a case badly to demonstrate the power in the press- no fingers lost.
One more point to the safety that they learned, and it's worth passing along. When kids, or even us oldsters, handle lead we must wash up thoroughly before we do other things. Like eat ice cream cone snacks. Smiley
