Maynard Rifle Cartridges

Recently I have developed an interest in the Maynard rifles and the cartridges for them. At this point I'm looking for a good reference to learn more about them. I've acquired a few of the common Maynard cartridges. However I need to form a list of the different ones to know what to look for while collecting the various examples while building a collection of them. Where would I find this information? Also looking to make purchase of said cartridges.

                                     Thanks, Sendaro

Since you ask specifically about cartridges, there is a large format chart showing reproductions of annotated, full-size pen-and-ink drawings of all Maynard factory cartridges from the percussion era forward.  Copies of this chart show up on eBay from time to time and likely on other sites too.  Also, for what it's worth, if you hand-color the chart and frame it, the result is pretty spectacular wall candy.

That large size wall chart has some errors on it but it is still  a good thing to have. Dixie Gun Works had many of them in inventory for years. They may still have them.

There's a book, booklet, out on Maynard cartridges by a fellow named King that may help. It's illustrated, but has some dimensions that would probably help ID cartridges. I have no idea of its accuracy, but I'm not aware of any other source that has made such a comprehensive attempt.

Thank you all for your suggestions / information. I'd like to find one of the wall charts mentioned. Might try giving Dixie GW a call. I find Dr. Maynard's inventions very interesting.

                       thanks, Sendaro

King's booklet will cost between $75 -$120 when you can find one. There were only 500 copies printed. The guy who made the wall chart must have had King's booklet because he has the same errors such as a '73 thick rim 22 Maynard and a '73 thick rim 38-50. There is no real evidence that either existed.

King's booklet has a lot of info on the experimental percussion cartridges that are extremely rare and difficult to find.

I just picked up #339 of 500 of this book on Ebay for $20 delivered. No one else even bid on it.
Didn't see 35-55 though

The 35-55 is listed in the 1890 catalog in the barrel listings as 28, 30 and 32 inch barrels 35 calibre, 55 grains. I have a 35-55 barrel that is full round x 30" long. I picked it up at the B'more show this past spring. I did not know the caliber when I bought it but it didn't take long to figure out what is is. I know of several others. They do exist.

Do you load for and shoot it?

No, I have not shot it. It is not a very shootable bore and I would need to make up cases. Robert Holter in Montana has one and he has shot it. He wrote an article in the Spring 2012 issue(issue 77) of the Black Powder cartridge news. It was an express cartridge shooting only a 170 grain bullet. It must have fouled the bore horribly.

I have a small book entitled "A Guide to the Maynard Breechloader" by George Layman.  Seems to cover the various cartridges pretty thoroughly, as welll as the rifles themselves, and their accessories.   Published 1998 by Pioneer Press.  ISBN 1-877704-18-0.    I see a couple for sale in Amazon.
