Picked up 25-20SS today, brass and dies ??????

read careful, no gun yet, just components!

Ive done my due diligence on 25-20SS and believe that it too is relegated to mostly if not all, breach seating service!

Is this correct?

I procured several hundred WRA 25-20SS brass in great shape, plus some RMC unfired, with a set of RCBS dies as new.
As well an Ideal 257464 mold, Plain Base modified.

I have a 25-20WCF blank sitting here but Im on the fence if I should simply go with my gut and cut a rolling block for 25-20WCF? If I have this I KNOW i get more POOP out of the cartridge but if it won't shoot worth a darn unless breach seating, I DONT WANT TO BREACH SEAT.

All I read is BS, BS, BS, BS oh and BS and "I BS this and that". And then even more BS, BS, BS..... So much BS on this forum, who would have known. (Pun intended)

In fixed form will it perform better or only equal to 25-20 WCF?
That is the BIG question. Id just as soon keep the mold and get a 25-20 wf for fixed ammo then.

thank you for your insight.

Mike

Lots of factory Stevens, and other makes of old single shot rifles being shot as fixed ammo in the caliber. Until last month I had a Stevens schuetzen rifle in .25-21 (very similar) and never shot anything but cased ammo.

Vall,

From the standpoint of accuracy, is there any difference (aside from BP compliance) in real world performance between the two?

Ease of case replacement
Bullet Weight handling
Pressure limits

Its not going to be a scheutzen gun the stuff gets used for by me.

Appreciate the prior insight. Thats good. Glad it is used as fixed ammo (currently)

No, the only difference between the .25-20SS and the .25-21 Stevens is the .25-21 is a straight taper case. Same base brass, and same velocities, and bullet.
Both cases are a PITA for case replacement, but at least Captech is building your .25-20SS, whereas they don't build the .25-21 Stevens.

I meant the 25-20WCf and the 25-20SS ( Is there a significant fixed ammo difference worthy of the long term expense?)

I don't get it.  You say you have a ton of .25-20 SS brass, so you're going to do a .25-20 WCF for which brass is even less available?  Did I miss something?

Well,
25-20WCF formed from much cheaper JI 32-20 brass
vs. 25-20SS JI brass at 1.40 each...
Maybe that's the reason?

Martini cadet in 25-20 SS use with jacketed bullets and hot loads. Not much different from 25-20 WCF, have one in High Wall. Also have a 25-20 SS in a High Wall I am still working to get accuracy. Use nothing but fixed ammo. Easy to push cast bullets to fast. What twist is your blank?

I have a couple .25-20 SS barrels and a couple .25-20 WCF barrels.  One of them is a rechambered Stevens barrel and two are interchangeable on the same Stevens action.

It always seemed to me that the .25-20 SS was easier to load accurately with the available canister powders than the .25-20 WCF was.  It took some doing to equal the accuracy of the factory offering in the latter.

My barrels aren't the quick twist versions used for target shooting nowadays, though.

I've only loaded the ammo normally.  I have a breech seater around here somewhere and some Hudson bullets for the .25-20, but haven't gotten around to doing the experiments yet.

I concluded that 25-20SS is "likely" a bit more work than I have the ability at this time in life to work with. I have liquidated the SS material I had procured and have shifted to WCF version. It will be another 20 years before I am able to spend time with real scheutzen rifles and the labor of love associated. I emailed my friend and he has culled all the 25-20 WCF material for me to utilize.

I am enjoying the feedback. Thanks in advance for the experiences mentioned.

The 257231 is an Ideal design for the .25-35.  My Hudson mould was made by Richard Hoch, from a crude sketch I sent him in the early to mid-80's.  (Every dimension I put on the sketch was there on the resultant bullets; I was impressed with Hoch's work.)

For a while it looked like they had that bullet in their Gallery on the Hoch web site.  At least, it looked like mine.  I don't have a photo at this time.

Unfortunately, I have a tendency to pile up project and experiment starts and bury earlier ones under later ones.  I do have some bullets cast and tumble lubed; just have to get away from all this fascinating black powder paper patch stuff and back to them.

Sorry if i confused things...257231 casts cylindrical at .259" from my loading tool. It looks like a Hudson style bullet but is not tapered as such.
