	Did a little reshaping on the stock and forearm today to get rid of the geometric shapes on the PG area, and forearm tip. Couldn't go much further, and not have it looked messed up, but it did improve the looks a lot. 	Thanks! Still needs more sanding, but the general shape is there. Wish the checkering wasn't so deep, as I'd prefer to remove it, and have it done better. But I'll live with it until I stumble across a good used stock set.

I plan to sand up to the edge of the checkering to have a sharp break line. But still will have to try various stain colors to see if I can match the existing. If not, I'll just Jasco strip the stocks and do the whole thing over.

	The hardest part of trying to match the color is because the color is the results of years of darkening due to UV light degradation (for lack of a better word) I think the striping is a good idea and then sand to get back to fresher wood. Good Luck, looks like a fine summer project.

Good Luck, looks like a fine summer project. I hope it doesn't take the whole summer! I'd like to put it on my schuetzen rifle display at our late August two day collector gun show! In the 1800's old gunsmiths used chromium trioxide to darken wood. I keep a small bottle of the nasty stuff here for repairs. It's pretty good for aging wood to gradually match natural aging. Just have to have a wet cloth handy, as it can go from light yellowish brown to almost black quickly if you don't wet it to stop the reaction. It's also not good to get in contact with your skin when wet!!

	Vall, You aren't the guy who used to bring a fantastic Stevens schuetzen collection to WAC at Puyallup in the early 90s are you? He was from Oregon, about all I remember.

Unfortunately he has recently succumbed to dementia, and his fine collection got broken up and sold by the managers of his estate. I've pretty much always had a interest in Marlin Ballards, and lever actions. I set up at Puyallup at the NRA's National Gun Collectors show, and my small display surprisingly won an award. I really just tossed something together to just be there for the event. Didn't expect any notice for the small display of schuetzen rifles, and tools.

	Took several applications of the CT to match the color, but it ended up very close! (You need to *Login* or *Register* to view media files and links) Now just a few coats of Wipe On Poly, and it should be done.

I have a good friend who's collected percussion rifles for many decades. He's a retired machinist, and does both wood and metal repairs on guns. He mentioned using CT that he gets from Dixie Gun Works many years ago. I had an 1881 Marlin that someone had bleached the wood on, and it brought back a very proper aged, old look in one application. Ever since then I've used it often for repairs that I didn't want to totally restore a complete stock. If I dilute the powder a little more than recommended with water, I can control how dark it gets a bit easier. Sometimes I have to use a little stain also, if the color needs adjusting. This one didn't need any adjusting, as it matched pretty easily. Just about out of my bottle of CT powder, so need to order another $6 bottle from Dixie soon!

	I agree with Chuck in his original thoughts and boy was I ever wrong. Outstanding results really does not do your work true justice but its the best I could come up with at the time Vall. Sure is refreshing to see you back sharing and this in another extremely valued bit of knowledge that you have always been so freely willing to share. JLouis
