RCBS Bullet Mold Recommendation
Jun 8th, 2016 at 4:00pm
Print Post
Has anyone used the RCBS #378-312 mold for a 38/55?  I'm contemplating a rebarrel of a 45/70 with a 28" 38/55 with .375 bore and a 1:12 twist.  This appears to be a reasonably priced mold and was wondering about others' experiences with it. Thanks.

Ed, with a 1:12 bore on the 38-55,you would be best to determine the length of the RCBS bullet and then do a twist ratio calculation ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

My 38/55 has a 1:12" twist and I use a custom Paul Jones 375gn bullet
They are big, bold and shoot beautifully!

Now I see why they call you Bad Ass, Mr. Wallace. This rifle will primarily be shot at 200 yards.

Fixed. At some point in the future the range will be extended, but primarily it will be used as an offhand 200 yard BPCR.

Thanks Schuetzendave. I'm not sure I need that much for what I intend to do with it, but a big bullet would cover all bases. would you have a notion as to performance of the 310 grain bullet in that fast a twist barrel?

Unfortunately, RCBS molds don't seem to be what they once were. Out-of-round, etc. Believe their production may have moved off-shore. With a 12" twist you can use about any bullet you want. The 312gr RCBS bullet should shoot just fine if you can get a good mold. But, 0.378" can be a bit large for a 0.375" bore. Most folks generally prefer 0.001-2" over. You might look at the BACo 0.376" molds. Definitely more $$, but they are high quality. Their 330gr Money bullet would seem to be a natural in your 12" twist and light enough that your 38-55 will have no trouble sending it along at longer distances once you get to that point. Some quality mold suppliers to check out are NOE, Pioneer & Brooks. There are others.

I think you would be best served to call and talk to Steve Brooks, BPCR is where he achieved his multiple championship status for several years running and making moulds is his business. When asking questions such as yours you will get several varying opinions some maybe spot on and some simply will not but they are all given with the intent of trying to be helpful. If you are looking to get your rifle shooting to the best of its ability I would highly recommend that you get an opinon from Steve Brooks who can also make you a mould to fit your exacting needs and his quality is second to non. That old saying of do what the consistant winners do holds very true if you were to seek advise from Steve and that would be my approach if I wanted to achieve the same extremely high shooting status that he has achieved in BPCR competition over the years that he has competeted.

Dave - does your formula take into account barrel length? Am guessing it is likely immaterial based on MV.

Could you tell me the Sg for a 13" twist with the 360gr Money bullet? Thanks.
