Hunting with a Hepburn

A friend sent me this pic in an email.

"Standing over one of her many trophy mule deer, subsistence-and-sport huntress “Gusty” Wallihan appears every inch the frontier matron with her dressy bonnet,
prairie-pattern cartridge belt, floral-embroidered gauntlets, hunting knife, and Remington-Hepburn rifle.  1895"

Seems that same picture was posted here on the forum someplace 6-8 weeks ago? It's a great picture, and was credited to a husband/wife team of hunter-photographers!

Yep. Husband was the photographer.  Here's the full photo credit.

I was trying to guess what cartridges she's got in her belt.  .40-70 Straight?   


Maybe just .45-70, since the cartridges don't seem to reach the bottom of the loops.  That certainly would be practical considering it was the Govt. cartridge of the day and region.

40-70 was popular in the Hepburn and those cartridges appear to be quite long. The belt is wide enough that any cartridge long enough to stick out the bottom would be one that would wake you up when you pulled the trigger. That's a nice deer.
