40-60 powder and bullet selection help needed
Jun 4th, 2016 at 9:43am
Print Post
I am just finishing a rebarrel of a Hepburn with a Douglas barrel chambered in 40-60 Maynard.
I would like to shoot breachseated with smokeless powder.
Any powder recommendations ?
Also need a source for a tapered bullet mold 350-400 grains.

I would assume that 40-50 SS data would be a good starting point if anyone has any to share.

Thanks for any thoughts
Dales

Will describe in next post

Dales,
The second bullet from extreme right in first pic is my 367 gr
Elliiptical Minigroove tapered bullet that I had cut by Steve Brooks. I had it cut for my 16 twist 40-65. May be just the ticket for your 40-60- it will seat "way up the spout" due to the taper. If you decide to try it, I can send you a drg of the bullet that Brooks cut the mold from. Suggest you get the rifle chambered, and then chamber cast and then you can adjust my dimensions as needed for your breechseating.
Also  be happy to send you a couple bullets to check fit.
The third from right is my Elliptical Paper Patch version of the EMini bullet. The second pic is a 5 shot group with the EPP bullet at 100yds.
For comparison, the Lyman 410663 "Snover" bullet, which also will shoot well in 40 cal 16 twist rifles.

Bruce,
The bullet on extreme left is my 440gr Elliptical PP bullet
1.54" long. For my 40-72W, 12 twist.
The grooved bullet next to the 440 EPP   is my BFSS gg bullet- 467gr, 1.55" long also for the 40-72W.

arnie,
do you have a drawing of the bullet you would share, and who made the mould?

Hi Dales,

Below are a few bullet designs I've used in my 40-50SS breach seated.

All seem to shoot well once you find the correct load.

300-MP, 4227 & 4759 work well for me.

To the OP......... you did not mention your barrel length or twist, which would be useful info. I'm shooting a 32" long 14.5" twist GM barrel in 40-65 and it shoots BACo Money bullets well out to 600yd (and, hopefully, 1000yd - will find out next month). The three that have shot best are their 400gr 'Kidwell', the 420gr M4 (that casts at 413gr in 20-1 for me) and a custom I had them make for me that casts at 439gr in 20-1. Have also shot the Saeco 640 bullet, but at 200yd the 400gr Kidwell groups better out of my rifle.

Bruce,
thought I had a pic on my camera. NOT.
I will provide a drg of the 440 EPP bullet soon as I take a pic of it.

My rifle has a 30" Douglas 1-16 twist barrel.
The reamer I used has a short (approx. .1) ball seat with a 1.5deg. throat.

The Ron Long bullet looks like the same design I use in my 32 RKS, I have had good luck with it, is anyone cutting this mold at this time?

Has anyone tried Buffalo Arms molds I see they stock some tapered molds ?

Thanks Dales

Bruce,
My 440 Epp (left) and the 373 gr Epp(on right) molds were both CNC cut by Distant Thunder/ Jim Kluskens. Excellent molds and right on specifications.

See reply #8. All my BACo molds (40cal & 38cal) are excellent quality and cast an excellent bullet.
From the left, 38cal 325gr, 340gr 38cal (Brooks mold, also excellent), 363gr 38cal, 400gr 40cal, 413gr 40cal & 439gr 40cal.

Dales,

I had Dave Farmer from Hoch Moulds make my mould for the Ron Long spitzer. Excellent quality.
