Rigby, with fixed loads and tipping.

I am/was preparing for a local Schuetzen (Gopher rifle and revolver club in Harris, MN) and trying fixed 32-40 with 170gr. FP bulllets. It is group a pie plate at 200 and I see small but clear signs of tipping. My load is 14.3 gr 4227 and Rem 2.5 primers with Starline 38-55 2.080 cases reformed into 32-40 with an average velocity of 1400 fps (chronographed). The rifle is a 30" Rigby Ballard with original sights and original heavy trigger pull. The velocity is ranging between 1380 and 1420 shot to shot. I need to remeasure the bore but I am reasonably sure the bullets are at least 0.001" oversized. Also, I have the bullet engaging the lands by about 0.040".  I was going to try this loading in my proven target rifle but I rammed the first cartridge home and touched it off with a click and remembered that the &$@^&% 44.5 had a broken firing pin again. ANy good source for proper original replacements?

For starters it would be helpful for you to know if your bullet actually fits your barrel. Push a lubed bullet into the barrel 2-3 inches ahead of the chamber, then push back out. Look at the bullet's bearing bands, does it appear to completely fill the barrel. Then measure that bullet against an as cast bullet.  Those two steps will tell you if the bullet fits.
You might consider LR primers instead of LP, especially with rifle having the large original firing pin.
You might try Wyoming Armory for a replacement firing pin. It would be a newly made but I can't think of why you would want an original pin if you intend to shoot the rifle?

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

What rifle are looking to get a firing pin for? If you happen to have a lathe you can very easily make a two piece firing pin as they are less prone to breaking.

Did I read right! You're talking about two different rifles. A Ballard and a 44 1/2. If you need a firing pin for the 44 1/2, try Gail and Paul at CPA. Great people who know their stuff.

Charles, I can cast your bore for you if you want. Give me a call. I am also planning to stop by the shoot but just as a spectator this time. I will bring along my just acquired #10 Schuetzen Junior and I will love to see you 6 1/2. I will get druel on it fore sure so bring along some WD40. LOL
BTW my #10 is .316 bore with .328 groove diameter. 16 inch twist.
I will also bring my breech seater along that I just made for it. I attached pics plus pics of the palm rest I made to match the PR mount that was on the rifle when I got it.

Charles, very nice 6 1/2 Rigby Ballard you have. A enjoy to inspect it.
Also had fun looking at the shooters equipment and talking about the guns. Many kind words on my #10 Ballard and I appreciate them. I saw a very nice Stevens in 28-30.
In addition was able to pirate much "IP" on equipment design. I really liked a shooters box that one guy had made from a Kennedy tool box. The guy was a shooter from Wisconsin and I didn't catch his name. Very nice and his walnut wood work added to the box was first class. Thanks if you are reading this.

At 200 170 g bullet started at 1400 fps is on the edge of going sub sonic just before it hits the paper.

Variables are, is the range actually 200 yards ? some are in meters, others not precisely measured. Is the bullet actually 1400 fps ? add the variables up it's likely the bullet is unstable as it goes back through the sound barrier.

Boost the powder charge just a bit and see if the holes go round.  My 200 gr 32/40 with 14.5 4227 will print round holes some times, slightly oblong others. Increasing velocity makes them go round.

However if the bullet is wobbling slightly just before hitting the paper it has very little effect on group size.  Groups too big something else is probably going on
