They probably are Stevens, I just used Unertl to describe...

Don G

So does just about everyone else...proving once again (as any bright kid learns before leaving elementary school) that there ain't no justice in the world, because it was the Stevens company which invented this way of attaching a telescopic sight.

By the way, the excellent replica Stevens blocks now available from Steve Earle are the result of two originals I sent him to be copied shortly after he began advertising his services, as he had not previously seen any originals.

Are the original Stevens blocks marked in anyway?

If the corners are beveled, rounded-off, it's Stevens.

Here is a picture of what might be the upgraded sight on a very clean 414. I also have the original sight that Came from a 414 that someone had back over, breaking off the bottom tang and the chocking lever off the rifle. I need to find someone that can make a new spring and put this rifle back together. Thanks for any information on a gun smith that works on 414??? Bonner

Never seen that sight on a 44 action. Think it's off of a Handy Rifle?

Bonner - Talk to John Taylor, who posts here, about the repairs. John can do about anything needed.

Looks more like some European military sight off a carbine of some type or other.  Looks kind of cool, but definitely not Stevens.

Holy Mackerel!--what kind of pervert would scrap Stevens' excellent rec'r sight and butcher the barrel to install this miserable hunk of junk!!!

To paraphrase Whelen, precision shooting with open sights can't be done.

Having owned several 414's, I don't see the bottom tang as being broken off.  In the bottom picture, I see a couple parts that I don't believe came off this rifle.  The only thing missing on the receiver sight appears to be the screw maybe?, and the pointer that goes under the mounting screw.  I don't see why it can't be reassembled with what you have other than a main spring and trigger spring.

Not marked, but here's what they should look like.  Note that blocks are of equal length, but hole-spacing is UNequal.  (There's a reason.) Note also V-groove that runs from top to bottom of block, and beveled corners.  These are Steve Earles' replicas, copied from originals I sent him.

The v-groove is likely to match up with the thumb-screw used to tighten the scope mount to the block.
