Stevens 414 Info

Print Post
Was shooting my brother's Stevens 414 this week and it has a small receiver aperture sight with some sort of flat piece of steel that is about 1/2" square with a non-adjustable pin-hole in it for the rear. Does anyone know who might make these inserts? Will post a pic once I figure out how to get out of my new cell phone.

Also, it has the tang drilled and tapped for a tang-sight. I have a Lyman 103 I can give him, but am wondering if anyone knows the standard hole spacing and screw size on the 414 tang sight?

Even with the too small aperture it is a shooter and was able to hold a 1.5" 10-shot group at 50yd. Also, is in terrific condition with an excellent trigger. Wish he would let me steal it from him, along with his Bonehill-Martini, which shoots just as good as the 414.

Tang sight hole spacing is 1.5 inches.   Original Stevens sights are expensive.  Watch out for two things:  Sights made for the TipUp have a different staff angle compared to those for a Model 44.  There is a "shorty" version of the 102 sight meant for the Favorite frame which is too short for a Model 44 frame.  I've made both discoveries while trying to acquire a sight to complete a nice Model 108 I bought over the winter.

Lyman sights I do not know enough about, (yet).

I sure wish I had somebody willing to give me a #103 Lyman.
But, whatever you do, don't mess up that sight! If I had to, I'd prefer to drill the tang on the rifle. 'Course, I haven't ever been very much around those Steven's things. Wink

Actually, I have three of the 103 sights, so am hoping one has the correct spacing.

Hmmm............ probably more than I need, so may list one in the classifieds after I see what I can get to fit my brother's 414. Once I get the pic posted you'll see why you need to try a Stevens for yourself. It is really a neat little (smaller framed) rifle. Sort of in the vein of a #3F Ballard. Just right for a .22rimfire.

Ahhh..hey, I don't have a thing against Steven's stuff. Though I've not owned one.
But, I give the same kind of grief to folks that drive Ford pickups, too. All in fun for me. Cool
Would like to have another 103 someday- but don't truly need it either, if ya know what I mean.

The sight you describe sounds like the factory sight made specifically for the 414. They are scarce. Don't lose it. There are no other apertures available. These are accurate guns. The US Olympic Team won the Olympics with them in the 1930's. The Lyman 103 would be a suitable replacement for target shooting. A 103 made for the Stevens would have  P stamped on the bottom of the base of the sight. They were available in .22 Long Rifle and .22 Short. Well built, accurate, fun guns to shoot.

I'll get the pic posted in a couple of days. It is a 98% gun. Terrific condition and a shooter with an excellent trigger.

Almost every 414 I've seen has an "upgraded" sight and the originals are very hard to find. I bought an entire receiver just to get one.
They won the Olympics with that sight, and the gun looks bad without it. Don't part with it.

That's the right sight. Case color looks really good on it. Next to the 417 Walnut Hill these are some of the most accurate 44 action guns.

It looks even better in 'real life' (not my cell-phone pic). And, it is easily the best Stevens action I've shot. I try to talk my brother out of it every visit (along with his original Bonehill-Martini in .22LR, with sights that are every bit as difficult to use).

What do you think the value would be for a Stevens 414 in 99 % condition with the original sight as well as the Lyman 103 and factory installed Unertl scope blocks?

The only reason I say 99 % is because of a small chip in the toe of the butt plate. Angry

If the blocks are factory installed, they ought to be STEVENS blocks.

$1000, give or take. A nice Lyman 103 is worth $3-400 on its own.

They probably are Stevens, I just used Unertl to describe.  I have never taken one off to check the under number, if any.  They are case colored like the receiver.  The 103 is mint.
