LGS Ruger value?

Stopped by LGS and he has a nice #1 7mm mag. for $650. Now I don't want that caliber but what is the action worth (what is a good buy price for just a 98% #1 action these days)? The stock is better than most for figure and very few dings.

S/N 130-33xxx

Thank you,
Charles

Charles, for $650 and good stock figure,
I would snap up that Ruger #1,particularly
it is probably a 1B with the larger forearm and
no barrel rib?
I have made a nice 40-72 out of one 1B and a
Obermeyer barreled 30 USA (30-40) out of another.
Easy to get appropriate extractors etc for the N01

Agree! At $650, I'd snap that up.

Good used Ruger Number One rifles have almost vanished around my home in central Washington, and people want $800+ when they do sell.

Hope you picked it up for the $650. That is truly a steal on the price. Doesn't matter the cartridge at that price if in good condition. Can always rebarrel in your favorite flavor and end up with a terrific rifle. I just picked up one of their new 'fast-twist' barrel 223s for F-T/R shooting and will make into a hunting rifle (bore & rifle to 7mm) if it doesn't work for F-T/R.

Stopped back and picked it up for $620. I disassembled the action and I doubt it has more than a box through it. 1976 vintage and I need to drink heavily to get up the courage to remove the barrel. But what would you do with a 7mm Rem Mag?

My 200 year 7 Mag bought new only had one problem. They hadn't managed to get all the bluing salts off it and they were leaking out of the joints and stock and attacking the blue. Had to strip it and neutralize everything. But, yes, great deal!

Good for you. Take the barrel off and have it bored & rifled in your favorite caliber (think I would go with a 38-50 - am starting to think it is "the" all around cartridge - hunting, Schuetzen & BP competition - can do it all).

A bit of info that might interest Ruger No.1 shooters is the new No.1 in .223R that showed up on the market about a month ago. It is a Lipsey's special and advertised as a 8" twist. I bought one to shoot in our F-Class matches, but mostly because I've never owned a No.1. Bohemianway warned me that they are not actually an 8" twist, which is needed to stabilize the 80gr bullets I was planning on shooting at 600/1000yd. Checking with Ruger, they stated it is a 9" twist. So, I further checked with Lipsey (they were very helpful) and they told me they ordered an 8" twist and assumed that is what they got. They also checked with Ruger and they are 9" twist. They (Ruger & Lipsey) told me to send the rifle back and they will put an 8" twist barrel on it. PITA, but at least I'll have what I ordered. Eventually.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Might be a good candidate for a .32-40 also, with just a re-bore and re-rifle.
