Anybody have any experience/advice for forming 40-70 BN cases from Starline 45-90? What dies do I need?

I think Mike Venturino discusses that in "Shooting Buffalo Rifles of the Old West

I'd 1st check the usual suspects (Captech, BACO,...), but this one looks like the normal sizer might do it with some judicious annealing and lube application...
Not the easiest way probable, but this should work.  After all, if I can make 577-450 from 24-gauge shotgun brass, this should be easy.

I have made quite a few. I just anneal the brass then size in the 40-70 fls die in baby steps. I get the shoulder close then trim. I have been using a hacksaw followed by standard trimmer . You have to debur really well. I leave them a couple thousandths long then finish in the fls die and fire form then finish trimming to length. I hate trimming brass and forming cases. Anytime I make any I tell myself I am going to buy firmed next time

I have formed a lot of 40-65 cases in steps. I was planning to get a .44-40 trim or FL die to form .40-65 when I found a set of .40-60 Win form dies cheap.

One of the steps that you might try is an open top  44-40 FL die. RCBS used this design up into the late 1970s I think. You can also try a 44-40 trim die.

The neck of a RCBS  .44-40 trim die is supposed to be .436 according to RCBS techs. The 44-40 FL die might be a little smaller but you might want to check with RCBS.

I have not asked them what the base of the .44-40 trim die is but the  solid head of the case is about .470.
Many 45-70 dies are .464 to .467 at the mouth so you could size a .45-90 case mouth with a 45-70 die small enough to start into the 44-40 die.  RCBS recommends only  .020 neck or mouth reduction per pass but we all size them more than that.

Just a suggestion.

I tried the baby steps in the 40-70 sizer. Seemed to work. Lots of work, but the cases fit the rifle. Now to work up loads. Thanks for the suggestions.
