When Dave built me a rifle on my No. 5 action and I was thinking 50-90 but he talked me into a 50-70. It is a gorgeous rifle that I am very proud of. He began work on it in June of 2007 and finished it at Christmas time.

The quality of Dave’s rifles advanced the more he made. Evidenced by mine with a serial number of 44.

GeorgeC wrote on May 21^st, 2016 at 2:08pm: Here is a photo of my Lone Star that was taken by Rooster. It was one of many photos that he sent me when I was doing a buy on this rifle from him. I have the original invoice from Dave Higginbotham to the original buyer that the rifle was built for, but I could not find a serial number which was supposedly #001. No serial number was listed on the invoice. I looked on the lower tang, under the soule sight on the upper tang, took the fore end off and no serialnumber. On the top barrel flat (in scroll) was Lone Star Rifle Co. In front of the fore end was 45 2.4 also in scroll. That was all the lettering and/or numbers I have found. The lower tang is not longer than the upper tang as on military rolling blocks. The invoice listed the rifle as a "Deluxe Sporting rifle", 32" half octagon/half round barrel, "Zika Soule grip" sight. Front sight listed on invoice is #492 Kyler front sight. Invoice is dated 5/28/93. More images to be posted. Posted a photo of the serial number that Mike Brooks sent me. The serial number (LS 0001) and is on the side of the upper tang. George C Great to see that old gun again. It sure is an attractive gun.

I can't speak to the quality of the original lone star rifles. The one that I acquired a while back has the serial number 250 and was listed as a cowboy action rifle. What I was told is that it was sent to John King which was rebarreled and restocked into a 40-65 WCF long range rifle. I did talk to Mr. King shortly after I purchased the rifle because I was having trouble getting the cartridges to fit in the chamber. He told me that he worked on a few Lone Star rifles and that he chambered mine in 40-65 Shiloh which is a tighter chamber and more accurate that typical 40-65 WCF. It is one of the most accurate rifles I own and is absolutely gorgeous.
