RBKenn,

I own #108 & #109. #108 is not 38-55. It is 32-40. #109 is 38-55, as shown.

Hello,
I spoke with Dave quite often, as I sold many of his guns and always tried to stock one in the store. Dave originally, when making what he considered "Lone star" rifles did not put anything on the action, just the barrel. The story he told me was that he built a few and just marked the barrels. The number was inside and custom features would be marked in the same way as Remington. (ST=set trigger etc.) He was informed by the BATFE that was unacceptable. Very few made it out without action markings, Perhaps just two. The remade and re-barreled actions he considered worthwhile but not true LoneStar rifles as he did not make the actions. I had him convert a few for the store as well. During the invitational in New Mexico only Lone Star rifles were allowed, no converted originals.
I still have two rifles, One was his rifle and is serial number 205, made in 2003 I believe. It was originally a two barrel set, 28 inch 50-70 and 32 inch 44-100 with sling swivels. It was his rifle but I needed one for a buffalo hunt since I had just sold my sharps rifle so he relented. He told me a tale once that he made two Sharps Rifles years ago and I would know them if I saw them as they say "Unreliable" on the barrel, I don't know if that was true or he was pulling my leg.
There are a few out there with 26 inch heavy barrels. They are Jim Rowe Specials.  That is what he called rifles that were already built that I bought for the store... He would tell me what he had and it always started with 32 inch barrel and I would always tell him "cut six inches off the barrel and send it up." He sort of made fun of that  but he was a fun man to talk with. I miss him. He made a rifle for my wife for our wedding. It has an unusual rapid taper for his rifles. The barrel  is a 28 inch 40-65 with fancy wood and engraved. It was built in 2005 and is number 343 . I hope someone finds this information useful.

I just picked up #199 ( .45-70 Silhouette) a couple weeks ago off of Gunbroker.  The serial number is actually covered by the base of the Soule sight.

Daves favorite caliber was the 50-70 and the list reflects that.   Sure not as many 44-77's though.  A purchaser friend relayed that the 44 was his second favorite.

I have a lot of fond memories of Dave and Katha.  He would spot for me at Raton for several years (as did Harold Forcum and Steve Garbe).  I owe my scores to these guys.  We used to have dinner at that diner in town connected to the motel right on the main hwy.  Forget it's name now.  Dave always insisted his steak extremely well done!  Almost burnt.

Dave would always rebarrel and finish an original sporter to me.  Dave and Katha invited Cindy and I to Sunday services one year at Raton.  We really miss him.

Serial 394 in 45-90 is on gunbroker now.  Looks like it'll go fairly low compared to some others.
