Be Honest - Do You Charge Smokeless Exactly?

I reload charging cases with a digital scale that measures to XX.XX grains.  If the charge on my boxes says 15.0grs - all the cases have powder drops between 14.8 to 15.2
Who charges all the time to the exact weight, say 15.00?

Black powder - different story: If the charge weight on the box says 70.00grs - the  charges are anywhere between 69.5 to 70.5 because black is a weak powder and have found based on accuracy ... the half grain difference really doesn't effect accuracy

I reload on single stage loader (Co-ax) and throw charges from a powder measure, then trickle up to the exact charge. My charges will not be off more then 1/10 of a grain, just old habits trying to eliminate one more variable, both smokeless and BP.

I do the exact same thing.

John I have found that repeating the same amount of volumne is more critical than achieving the same exact weight once a good load has been established. This is in regards to breech seating and soley based on my own personal experiance.

I use a scale, digital or balance, for all smokeless powder charges. Joe S

As long as you are using an accurate measure just dropping the load is just fine.  Many very small groups have been shot by using just the measure.  Now over 600 yards is another story.

Powder is hydrosopic and no matter how careful one is in storing it and using it it will still gain and loose moisture "as soon as you open the container" based on its current enviroment and the weight will change accordingly so how would one know for certain if the 15grs. is exactly the same today as the 15grs. at an earlier date or a later one? If your results on the target are not always the same you might want to try loading by volumne while also using a more exacting powder measure such as a Harrel or a B&M that will provide you with a more precise amount of volume.

I load using a Harrel's  measure in a "clean room" (stable temp, humidity and no air movement), check weight of each 5th round loaded. (Any difference, I go back and weigh each round prior.) Never vary from .1 gr.  Re calibrate scale if and whenever any doubt. Seldom have to adjust the Harrel's  - never more than 1 click. Weight and volume must be pretty close. No?

Ray I honestly don't know as I use one case and drop the powder charge in the open air at the range during a match where the difference might actually come into play. Whether it be winter summer or some where in between it has always provided more consistency for me than trying to achieve an exact weight what ever that might be for a given day? The lesser of two evils might be the way for one to look at it and it has always seemed to provide more consistency for me for my purpose. I am not saying it is the correct way but only that is has worked for me and that it is indeed a very interesting subject to learn from for a change.

I use a digital and try to get within .1 grain wt. shooting in the military, it is a habit to get the best consistency. If I am just plinking around, I am not so particular. With black, I sure try to keep it pretty close. It is bad enough that I cannot see the distances I used to see without having my loads very too much.  gunner'

I would doubt that powder will absorb any measurable weight of moisture from the air. Maybe with a better scale than we use- really better- there may be some difference, but tiny. Far less than the tenth of a grain we all seem to agree is the holy grail.
I just took a charge of 4198 (don't want to waste better powder) and weighed it three times. Then, I took a plant mister and gave it two shots of water. It was damper than you'd put into a "real" load. But, it didn't show up on my accurized RCBS or a digital that I use.  Smiley
I came back to ammend this: I shot it with water two times on a plastic lid, then measured. When I did it the third shot, it just clumped up on the lid from water surface tension and needed to be thumped to get it off. Would not have gone through a measure.

As a side to the exactness of our load measurement. Is it possible  that the weather conditions, like heat or HUMIDITY, cause different readings of our scales in what are actually identical doses of powder?
In other words, is the measuring inaccurate, not the powder actually weightier in humid conditions?
I wouldn't know how to test this theory. But, maybe................

When using quick burning-rate powders in small capacity cartridge cases, yes.

I load a lot of Hornets as this has been my go to squirrel gun load in wonderful Condor Country CA. (It will be everywhere in CA soon).  Use Barnes varmint grenades for the hornet.  On all my other calibers I use a RCBS digital dispenser.  It is the greatest, but for my hornet I use a cheap Lee powder measure.  With ball powder like 296, it is very very accurate, usually to 1/10 of a grain.

Some of the Lee products, while being inexpensive, work very well.  The little powered measure is one of those products.
