357 magnum cadet.

I have just commissioned my last custom cadet (for a while anyway) in 357mag. And before the martini nuts get hot under the collar it is a Sportco 22lr conversion that I have finally shot out the barrel not an original 310.

So what I'm wanting to know is can you get a short seated 357mag round the bend and is accuracy affected by only seating bullets to 1/4 in or there abouts? I'm looking to run three main loads a 140 grain plastic tipped hornady 180/200 grain soft point an a yet to be determined ACP (aussie copper projectiles).

Someone will say why don't you ream a max chamber simple answer brass availability in Australia is close to zero. And in a pinch if I run out of hand loads nearly every gunshop has 357 pistol ammo on the shelf.

If anyone has any experience with 357mag cadets and long cart. oal your advice would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Myra

I have been shooting my 357 mag converted Cadet for a couple years now. (It was rebored back in late 1950s by/for
Klein's in Chicago. Otherwise all exterior is original As a kid, always wanted one. Picked this up finally a couple yrs ago.)
Anyways, twist appears by test to be about a 1-13.
My favorite load is a Lyman 358315, 200 gr RN bullet, cast 9+1 WW/Lino, over 13 gr 4227, seated out to crimp groove
and crimped. The ctg loads down the ramp nicely.
And it shoots Very Well.
I had considered modifying it to the Maxi ctg- as per Mike DeLand in Alaska, who described mods to mechanism to allow the ramp to drop a bit farther. But, decided, its great just as is 357Mag.
I would not bother with the maxi, unless, as Mike said, one wanted to try BP loadings.

As .357 max. can be iffy, most anything .357 should be no issues to get round the bend - but the best way is to give it a try.  Martini's actually are made for BN rounds - they can swallow some huge BN rounds , straights sometimes can be an issue.

I'm shooting a Cadet that was rebored and chambered to the Mag cartridge before I got it.  I rechambered to the Max.  Using a RD359190 I don't have any trouble chambering the cartridge, tho I do have to hold the lever down so that the block is low enough.  Doesn't bother me.  GW

Thanks for everyone's replies.

Beltfed this was more in line with what I was after. Time constraints don't allow me to pour my own unfortunately. But on the up side there are a couple of good bullet makers here in Oz. I will looking to be keeping speeds up as much as possible so that will cancel lead out for most of what I'm doing. When I get sick of culling critters and think that sheets of paper and metal animals are in plague numbers then I will look at the lead options.

243myra,
Until you do get around to casting, in addition to usual 357mag ammo  you could also use up to   almost any of the 180-200 gr 35 cal  jacketed bullets in the 357mag case and still be able to load "down the ramp".

I have a magnum and am making a maximum out of a shot out .222r sportco....
Loaded some dummy rounds with a 180 gr barnes copper. This s a long bullet. It slips in the chamber just fine. Il. Post some pics as the project progresses

Thanks once again to everyone that replied.

Every thing is at the Smith so just hope it will be done by September so I have time to work up some loads before I go chasing pigs.
