Lyman and others show many smokeless loads for the Trapdoor in their special trapdoor loads section. I wouldn't do it opting instead for real black powder, which is what the rifle was designed for.

True, although all they had then was black powder. Smokeless did not exist.

Many safe smokeless loads for the trapdoor since smokeless was invented. Factory ammo and components for the re loader.

Smokeless is fine in Trapdoors. The action can take it! When the government was looking at the 30-40 Krag, they rebarreled a handful of Trapdoors to use for testing. All the guns held up. The published data for the Trapdoor is well below 30-40 Krag pressures. As for fillers, I use Kynoch's foam wads in my 450 No. 1 Express. The large case causes ignition problems with NFB charges without them. Good Luck!

I just started using Puff-Lon for a filler. Neat stuff. Real poofy.

I'm surprised that know one has bought Unique to your attention. I was the second most accurate powder in my 45/70. First was a duplex smokeless load.

If you try 10.0 to 12.0 gr of Unique, you won't be sorry. I'd bet that it will out shoot 2400, 4227 and 4759. It did in my rifle.

Start at 10.0 and work up in .5 gr increments. NO wads or fillers.

I am surprised no one has bothered to ask the gentleman just how far he wants to shoot accurately as the powder one chooses and or recommends would be directly related to what ever that might be? For instance 10-12 grains of Unique probably won't earn him any honors at the Quigley match but IMR3031 might just be able to accomplish that feat if he does his part based on a close friends results with that powder.

10 - 12 gr of Unique, will be accurate to, at least 300 yards and the velocity range will be simular to the 1000 yard, BP loads in 45/70-90.

3031, will get you nothing but a VERY sore shoulder, at the pressures it will take to make it burn.

The real question to tune his load is the groove diameter and if the bullet is large enough to fill it and still be able to seat in the case and fit in the chamber.

Try some Black Horn 209 in your TD.  It's very bulky and doesn't require fillers. Pressures are moderate compared to the faster powders like 4227. Very consistant velocities.  No clean up mess like BP.  It's all I use in my cast bullet rifles.
