Browning 1885 question

Print Post
A friend has an unfired (NIB) Browning 1885 in 45-70.  The forearm was loose.  We sent it to a Browning service center.  As suspected, the bolt holding the forearm hanger to the receiver was loose.  After paying $65 to get this fixed we find the right side of the forearm presses against the barrel at the very front of the forearm.
Since this is supposed to be a free floating barrel, how much can we expect this to affect group size?

Shoot it as is. Remove the forearm and shoot it. Compare groups.

Won't get the chance to shoot it.  Question is whether or ot to buy it.
In any case, I'm too out of practice to comparte groups.

Free floating the barrel at the forearm tip should not be much of a chore.

The area where the rear of the forearm meets the action is more critical than that of barrel meeting the firearm, especially if you intend to rest the barrel on cross sticks. Your concerns about the forearm would not keep me from buying the rifle, they shoot too good not to warrant a purchase.

A little judicious use of some sandpaper or a scraper and some elbow grease would take care of any forearm fit issues you are having in a matter of minutes.

Free-floating a barrel is dead simple.  I wouldn't let a little thing like that get in the way of purchasing that rifle, especially not when it's such an easy thing to remedy.

I put a small O-ring on the hanger between it and stock for the screws to pass through. A dollar bill will pass between stock and barrel but I never found any difference shooting BPCR off cross sticks.

Pressure between the action and forearm is a consideration.
