25-20 SS loads

I have a Stevens 44 25-20 SS with a newly reworked action and relined barrel. Very solid and tight, like new. Need suggestions friendly loads. This is the only 25-20 SS I've ever had and I've little to no experience with it. Shot it yesterday with some loads a friend gave me, but he wasn't sure about the powder load. The bullet is a FN 90 gr. Seemed pretty mild. Shot 5 rounds and two RMC cases split. I'm betting it was Unique. The friend's brother loaded these and both guys are very experienced and reliable, but I won't shoot any more of those! I have new brass and some 85 gr FN bullets, lots of 4227 and 4198 powder and both SR and SP primers. RMC brass is made to be long-lasting; should be OK with the proper load, but I want to start with new brass and enough beginner information to work up loads safely. Make sense? I think so. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks. Undecided

These days the 25/20 ss is used more for target work with heavier bullets usually 100 grs. or more for work out to 200 yds. Best accuracy is usually attained by breach seating bullets, which is just as well as brass is hard to get and expensive. I use the 105gr Hoch bullet with Mp300, AA9, and other powders of close burn rate.

1-16. Well, the original Stevens twist was 1-13 which was for the 68-75 grain bullets of the time. If you are sure about the 16, you might be limited to the 68 grainers available today like the Lyman 257420. That's what I shoot in my 13 twist 44 with very good results using 6.8 grains of H108.
