11.7mm Danish Rolling Block at the range!

Spent a little time with the 11.7mm Danish Rolling Block today, at the range! Dad bought this rifle shortly after WWII, and fired one round through it. He and I have talked of shooting this rifle for years, and a few years ago we unraveled a few of the "secrets" of this long-obsolete cartridge and he assembled some ammo on .45-70 cases, shortened a bit. He never did get it out to try the new ammo at the range, but is real happy that I made it happen today. Only fired 4 shots through it, and only at 10 yards. Mild recoil, pleasant sounding dull "boom" (like a .45-70 Trapdoor load). Trigger pull is about 963 pounds...  Maybe more... Danes must have strong trigger fingers! Hey, I'm 1/4 Dane myself, no problem!

Wow! This was so much fun! I'm going to stretch the range next time, out to 50 or 100 yards, and start doing some handloading for it myself. Todays loads used a .459" 405 grain flat-nose cast lead bullet. I don't know what Dad's powder charge was. It was very mild though. As is appropriate for the ol' beast.

Regards, Guy

GuyM,

NICE GROUP & your stock looks MUCH better than the furniture on my musket.

Are you planning to hunt Big Game with your musket??
(I bought mine to hunt wild boar & Red Deer in Eastern Europe, in a place where NON-citizens cannot use modern rifles. - PRE-1890, single-shot muzzleloading or cartridge,  >.40 caliber bore & loaded with  BP firearms only are lawful there.)

yours, satx

I agree with the big smile.  This is what we all were like first shooting an old
rifle the first time.  I think as we get older we forget what brought us to these
old rifles in the first place.  Instead of shooting and enjoying these old rifles we
have turned it into competition where one of two wide shots ruin the fun at the
range.  ASSRA was formed by owners of original old rifles that wanted to get
together to share knowledge and enjoyment of shooting these treasures.
So keep shooting and keep smiling  Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley

Thanks all! I have a lot to learn about this rifle, but for now am just treating it gently and enjoying it.

Yes! Hunting is a consideration. I'd like to hunt with this. Here in Washington State, I can hunt whitetail, blacktail or mule deer, black bear, elk... I'd think this would do on any of those, with a well-placed shot.

Regards, Guy

Cheatin' Charlie- you sure said a mouthful. I used to compete (in other formats) and found it had ceased to be fun for many of the fellows attending. Now, I just plug away for my own enjoyment and that of any who happen along are welcome to plink a few on me. Very relaxing and spiritually satisfying. Thank you.

Guy, neat rifle, good start at using it. But, the smile looks to be worth more than the gun- your pop must be delighted.

Guy, you are doing good there!  I'd throw in an image of me an my brother shooting our rolling block and trapdoor out in the woods.  Won't go!  Anyway, good on you!
