That's an interesting position for the calibre stamp on the Remington singleshot.

That is for sure a non factory 40-65. Only way to know what it is would be to slug and chamber cast. It is whatever the fellow that did the work made it.

The only thing I can tell you is the barrel slug at 0.436, What the crud is between the barrel and action is anybody guess. I bought this gun off the net, no history. Bonner

.40 caliber sizes varied from .403 to .411.
What rifling profile?

Nice looking rifle by the way. I think I want it.  Wink

Be patient. Many ways to skin a cat. If the bore is in good shape and the barrel is solid in the receiver, you can make it shoot. Sounds like you'll need a custom size mold for one.

Bore in good shape?

Well I went back and looked under the fore end  and found  another 40.65 and #3731 on the underside of the barrel. here is the slug also. I can see no lands and groves on the barrel slug. I am learning as I go, I hope. Bonner

Well, those second marks at least look more authentic.  Just a guess from your bore measurement and the look of the chamber cast, it looks like maybe a .44-77 to me.  Or maybe a .44-90.
