Wiping rod source?
May 4th, 2016 at 11:01am
Print Post
I am needing a longer wiping rod for my Sharps heavy target. The one I have (I believe 48") is not quite long enough to clear the butt stock and Vernier sight.
Any good sources? I have looked on BACO's website and they are all 48"
Thanks
Curtis

Curtis - don't understand why you need a rod longer than the butt stock to the muzzle.  I wipe from the chamber to the muzzle with a flexible Delrin rod - no issues.
OK ... here's an option for you: two Delrin rods connected with a union ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Well my rod might be shorter than what I think Cry

The current rod I am using is a wooden range rod, and by the time I get to the end of the muzzle the ball on the end is right at the sight.

The thing with the Delrin rods is that they are really flexible, so they don't have to be longer than the rifle itself, just longer than the barrel.    They'll bend around the comb of the stock, the rear sight, and the hammer (assuming it's in the way).

Steve makes a great wiping rod.  I have them in .45, .40, and .38 cal Smiley

If you order one, I recommend asking Steve to drill and tap it so you can use it with a nylon brush too.

I did not do this with mine and am going to drill and tap mine this week.

Seitz Ent. delrin wiping rods are 5/16" dia, threaded both ends to 8-32 std thread for your jags or brushes. So, one rod fits all. just add your appropriate sized jag or brush.  Includes a rod guide, which acts as a protector against rubbing on your tang sight.  NO handle to get in the way.
Std about 48" actual length. Your jag will add another inch or so.   $20 post paid.
29aholic, If you really do need a rod slightly longer, I do happen to have on hand a rod at 52" long.
pm me if interested in std or extra long.
A new run of  rods is in progress.

That sounds nice Arnie.  I only use the handle of my Steve Rhoades rod to write the caliber on so I don't accidentally grab the wrong one Smiley

I have made 2 of the delrin wiping rods for my self, I used a piece of brass on the end to hold jags and brushes. If beltfed can make you one of the length you want that would be the way to go. Material cost isn't bad but its the shipping that is a real killer.

I make my own up from either Delrin or Hardwood Dowels.  Woodcraft supply has a good selection of Hardwood. Oak seems to work the best, Walnut looks best. Local plastic suppliers have Delrin in 5' sections.

Handle them up on the lathe, I keep a few no handles so they can slip into plastic pipe for car trunk transport.

Some I turn Jags into the Delrin/Wood on one end. Other end either a handle or buy a brass rod adaptor from Pro Shot and let it into the rods's end. Delrin you can tap like metal, threads hold fine if you screw in the adaptor and use it for the on and off .

I call the thin Delrin Rods "Spagetti" rods, they will bend around a tang sight.

Make one for you but shipping is a killer. Beltfed has it figured out, get one of his.

I'm thinking  I need one for my Ballard No. 2 .25-25 Stevens with 30" brl.  I wonder if Delrin comes in 7/32"?  6mm would probably work..I know 3/16" would..but maybe too noodle like?
